As a die-hard Katharine Kerr fan, I read and enjoyed the Nola O'Grady books, but was very conscious that they really weren't up to her usual standard. The plots were overly convoluted, the humorous elements slightly forced. So what a relief and a joy to read Sorcerer's Luck and have Kerr right back at her best writing. It's another urban fantasy love-letter to San Francisco, but Maya is a much more engaging protagonist than Nola and the plot and pacing are much more assured. And of course, with Kerr's gift for writing attractive men, Tor Thorlaksson is very appealing. Norse mythology, a hint of magic realism and strong characters combine to make a really gripping story, with tantalising hints about the Maya and Tor's future. The next book in the series can't come soon enough for me.

The other reviews already against this item have covered plot elements. So I'll just say I really enjoyed the mix of old Norse runes, a contemporary artist and San Francisco. All the secondary characters are full people, not cannon fodder, and this gives a well rounded feel to the book, not to mention the warmth another reviewer noticed. Compared to mass market paperbacks, this is a little more expensive - but it is a very nice quality small press output, with good quality white paper, clear printing and a solid cover.
Worth the money, looking forward to the sequel.
I gave it four stars not five, because while it is very good, I wasn't totally blown away by it. That is probably more a matter of personal taste rather than any quality of the book.

Katharine Kerr always manages to product something with a little twist to it which is why I enjoy reading her books. Just wish there were more of them.

This stand alone book was also an excellent read with interesting and likeable characters that I would like to read more of.
