A story about learning that life keeps changing - just as the seasons do (Families Magazine)

A wonderful story which acknowledges the emotional ups and downs experienced by a small girl whose existence is about to be turned upside down by the arrival of a new baby. The story is brought to life through the imaginative use of the Seasons to illustrate the passage of time. A concept easily grasped by our three year old daughter (called Sophie) whose brother was born nine months ago. Our whole family recognised the little girl in the story and it provided an ideal opportunity for us to discuss the issues raised.

This is a beautiful story, which reduced me to tears! It is presented with excellent illustrations, and the tale makes the concept of a new baby easy to grasp.
My 3 year old loves it, and I still read it to her now that her brother is 6 months old. He has been referred to as 'our Autumn baby' from pregnancy onwards, because of the Winter baby in this book.
A perfect gift for a little girl expecting a brother.
My only slight reservation is the handling of the concept of jealousy, as 'Sophie' is forced to play alone in the garden when mummy and daddy are too busy with the baby.

Bought as a present for a relative. Lovely story and great for children of all ages. It is the story of a little girl called Sophie and the arrival of a new baby in the family. Really good for helping children understand the changes that occur with a new sibling.

Sophie learns her mother is expecting a baby. The new baby arrives, gets all the attention and Sophie is ignored. She is left alone in the snow, crying because her parents are preoccupied with the new arrival. Her Daddy comes out and scoops her up, but simply tells her that the world has changed and Sophie can just lump it.

Harsh stuff, huh?

Indeed it is. I'm ambivalent about this book because all that happens is that Sophie has to put up with a sibling and learns to live with being less important than she was. How this is supposed to reassure children expecting a sibling I can't imagine!
