VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 starsJust Excellent
11 March 2016
This is not my normal read and I think I said that after "Email from a Vampire" (excellent). I love how Nigel has your interest from the first page. We meet Sophia who is a concert cellist about to become engaged to Spencer, when her life is turned around by an horrific car accident. Her parents are disgusted at her behaviour - something/someone seems to take over her life, making her very promiscuous (to say the least). The front cover states "Sometimes your state of mind has a dark side" or "A story of love, loss and mania" and "an insanely addictive read" It's all this and more. Nigel has put a lot of research into this book and it's obvious throughout. Well done, roll on the next book

3.0 out of 5 starsGood read but not all to my taste
24 February 2014
I really enjoyed many parts of this book however I was not a fan of the ending. I will try not to give it away but I am usually a fan of dark novels and the ending was a little too predictable and happy for me!
Also, I was not so keen on the graphic sexual scenes but again, this is just a personal preference.
All in all it is a good and interesting story but due to the ending, I probably wouldn't rate it as one of my favourites.

5.0 out of 5 starsDefinitely different

Format: Kindle Edition
Not quite what I expected, but after the unexpected (and quite horrific) cliffhanger at the end of chapter four, I was hooked. From there on in, I found Sophia's (often outrageous) journey to be entertaining, educational, and thoroughly enjoyable.

The story had me guessing what Sophia's problem was i.e. a mental issue, something darker and more sinister. But I could not quite figure out what it was. When it did all come out in the end, it was definitely not what I was expecting, certainly a twist in the ending.

Classical musicians will appreciate this book. But, even though Sophia is a concert cellist, that is not the main focus of the story.

I recognised many of the places used by the author in this novel. Especially around North London.

Sophia is powerfully written and might even disturb some readers in places.

A fascinating story, not the norm for sure.

5.0 out of 5 starsDefinitely a page-turner!

Format: Kindle Edition
Even though I was somewhat involved in the process of gathering the information for this book and I knew some of the plot, I was surprised and very impressed with all the details and twists in it. After the descriptions in the beginning, the book is a real page turner after Chapter 4. I couldn't put it down and therefore finished it in a couple of days.

As a classical concert cellist myself and with Nigel's attention to detail, I could really relate to Sophia. When horrible things were happening to her and her cello, it felt like it was happening to me and my cello and I could really feel her pain. I will not include any details here, but there was a point in the book where I actually shed some tears (and I don't ever cry when reading!). At times like this, it was even harder to put the book down!

Having read Email From A Vampire, I was quite surprised with the different genre of this book, but it is just as amazing as the first one. Classical musician or not, it doesn't matter, everyone should read it! :)

4.0 out of 5 starsNot run of the mill

When I started reading this ,it was a bit slushy romantic and I thought I would not like it ,however things change and it soon kicks in and becomes a very good read and totally absorbing. Being a Londoner and a musician ,I related to a lot of the places and references in the book ,which has been well researched ,even small details are accurately recorded . As to the story itself, I can relate to a very good friend who is a brilliant violinist and almost gave up playing through mental illness , so a very pesonal resonance with me on that score. I am happy to say that like Sophia, she is back on track with her career. The story itself is captivating, as you watch the self destruction of a very well brought up young lady with an exceptional gift, start to disintigrate and delve into the dark side of life and personality. Even at the depths of dispair, there are good things that happen along the way and maybe she would be a better person for the experiences that befall her in the course of time. Recap ...... An enjoyable read and a good holiday book .

Sophia is compelling and complex, with an unusual storyline. Nigel Cooper's Sophia, a virtuoso cellist, is launched on a journey no nicely brought up musician expects to travel. Shocking and sensual, this book was one I needed to finish.
