Sony Xperia Z3+ with fixed battery
From the Manufacturer
Slimmer, Lighter, Faster
Go somewhere unexpected with the Xperia Z3+. It’s the smartphone that does more and goes further - whether further is a day by the pool or a run in the rain. With a waterproof rating, you can find your way in a downpour, take pictures in any weather or just wipe off your phone after an unexpected spill. And you can enjoy premium performance every day too - the sleek, 6.9 mm thick smartphone weighs only 144 g, so it’s easier to hold and take with you wherever you go.
The Future of Sound in your Smartphone
The Xperia Z3+ brings you the latest Sony sound technologies, for a crystal clear listening experience. Hear your music like it was meant to be heard thanks to Hi-Res Audio. It reduces distortion and noise at wider frequency ranges to reproduce high frequency sound in amazing detail. The result? Every track you listen to resembles the sound quality originally recorded in the studio. And it doesn’t get much better than that.
Enhanced Auto, Better Photos
The Xperia Z3+’s camera excels where other smartphone cameras disappoint. The 5 MP front and 20.7 MP rear cameras take good shots even in low light, thanks to light-sensitive sensors and Superior Auto. Indoors, at night or when the sun’s behind your subject, your shots end up clear and sharp no matter where you are.
Plus, Sony has raised the selfie bar with the Xperia Z3+. They’ve added some of their most enhanced camera technologies to the wide-angle front camera, like SteadyShot with Intelligent Active Mode. The result is shake-free front-camera videos and sharper-than-ever selfies that fit you and all your friends in.
Two Days of What You Love
Get directions at midnight, marathon-watch your favourite show or skip the charger in your overnight bag. Xperia Z3+’s incredible two-day battery life means you can do more with every charge. In fact, up to two days of power is just the beginning. If you want to keep going for longer, the Stamina mode can make standby time last four times as long, so you can do even more with every charge.
Entertainment, Wherever you Are
With PS4 Remote Play, fights over the TV are history. You can seamlessly switch from your PS4 console to your smartphone - and take your gaming to another room. Just connect your Xperia device to your home Wi-Fi and play games using the Dualshock 4 controller wherever you want. You can immerse yourself in the game like never before too. With Digital Noise Cancelling technology, the only thing you hear is your entertainment. Exterior noise is blocked out by 98 per cent when you pair your Xperia Z3+ with the MDR-NC31EM headset.
Plus, the Xperia Z3+’s generous 5.2 inch display is brighter than ever. Not just luminous in low light, the Xperia Z3+ shines in any light. The high display luminosity combined with Sony’s contrast enhancement technology makes for sharp viewing even in bright sunlight.

However, that's the only bright point. The phone over heats constantly with the battery draining really quickly - you can feel it roasting quietly in your pocket. Performance should be better than the Z3 but it constantly stalls (particularly in the camera or switching between apps) - probably as a result of the phone throttling the CPU back. The 4k video, which was always a bit flaky with overhearing in the Z3, it's now nearly unusable.
It looks like Sony is well aware of these issues - see articles online and are promising a software fix during the Summer. This might change my view but, at the moment, as a loyal Sony buyer and early adopter, I feel very disappointed.
The Z3 is a better phone and now will be a much better deal. Buy that instead.
As an update, I have returned this to Sony for repair. I was vaguely dissatisfied with the audio (partly the reason I bought it) and, after some experimentation, I discovered that there was an underlying crackle under all audio playing through the headphone socket. I assume this is just a fault in my device.
In any event, to tide me over, I bought a cheap Xperia Z2 and, to be honest, it's a better phone than the Z3+ is.Read more ›
The phone runs hot under normal use (things like games, web browsing and phone calls) - even after the update issued by Sony. I wouldn't be bothered too much by this if the overheating didn't make the phone chew through its impressive battery. Using it as a satnav caused it to overheat and use a nearly all of its battery up my 2 hour drive, this is even more impressive than it sounds as I had it plugged in to charge the whole time. It simply could not charge as much as it was discharging.
1) Browsing is not smooth. Scrolling is not working well, but it freezes whilst swiping along the screen.
2) Camera can not use the AR functions well. It runs very poorly, as if lack of memory or computing power
3) The phone gets HOT very easily, and when using the camera, it is not a matter of if it will switch off, but when. If you use the AR function you will be lucky to get away with a a few shots before the software switches off. This is a serious flaw naturally, you just can't play around with the different functions, because whilst doing it, the phone heats up, and by the time you are ready for a shot, the phone is done, dusted and out.
When calling support Sony doesn't acknowledge the heating problem. If you google it, you will see it is all around you... Sony should acknowledge the problem, solve it and move on. I have had this phone for 8 days. It is going back to the shop.
Remote Play works better than the vita on this device (the phone allows remote play with a resolution to 720p).
The speakers are great and I never need to have it on maximum volume which is great.
The display isnt eye poppingly detailed but it is very good and again, I never need to have it on maximum brightness.
Battery life is okay for me but it does depend on what you do on your phone that determines the length of the battery.
The camera is unlike I have ever seen on a phone, Sony have really done a great job with the camera hardware and the software too, the pictures are eye poppingly detailed and the dedicated two click camera button is a bonus too. This is without the heat that can be produced when using the camera app which I'll talk about in a moment.
The software of the phone isn't pure android but it is near the stock experience. For example, Sony has its own keyboard, its own music, pictures, videos and camera apps, its own icons. Nothing major like Samsung where they change functionality by making you unlock the phone in a different way.
I have noticed the heat when using processor intensive apps but in my opinion, heat is not a problem and I know firmware upgrades can help make the phone more efficient on the processor.
Final things to note if you're looking to buy this is that a screen protector is already applied out of the box, Qualcomm quick charge 2.0 is supported and the phone does not include any headphones but includes an OTG cable which I used with the Xperia transfer app to transfer data from my old phone.
Final thoughts is that this phone is great for me and I have had no problem using it.
