World's first Digital Noise Cancelling technology in a smartphone
Experience legendary sound, loud and clear. Sony’s Digital Noise Cancelling technology gives you the clearest, most immersive listening experience. Up to 98% of all ambient sound is reduced using Active noise control, a technique that removes the lower-frequency portions of the noise, preventing high-frequency noise from ever reaching your ears. Want uninterrupted entertainment? The MH750 headset* (optional extra) effectively blocks out street noises and leaves you with your own, pure unadulterated sound. High-comfort fit earbuds let you enjoy your favourite tracks, videos and games undisturbed. This Digital Noise Cancelling headset* samples surrounding noise through a microphone, and is compensated by the DNC circuit in the Xperia device. The resulting output is a full-range audio with deep bass, a strong medium register and clear highs - that’s music to your ears.
*Compatible headphones included. The Xperia Z2 features unique Digital Noise Cancelling (DNC) technology optimised for use with Sony DNC headphones (optional extra). Specifications verified by Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX service.
The world’s best camera and recording capability in a waterproof smartphone **
Take photos and videos like never before with the quality and performance of a digital camera. The Xperia Z2 has a 4K camcorder and a 20.7 MP camera, combined for the first time in a smartphone. More pixels. More sense. With a megapixel count of 20.7 and a mega sensor 30% larger than the standard smartphone, the Xperia Z2 Android phone is on a par with Sony's compact digital cameras - meaning super-crisp, ultra-sharp images. The Xperia Z2 combines 4K video capture with a large 1/2.3” 20.7 MP Exmor RS for mobile image sensor, Sony’s award-winning G Lens and the intelligent BIONZ for mobile image-processing engine. The results are images with a superior sharpness, clarity and brightness - every time. (** In compliance with IP55 and IP58, Xperia Z2 is protected against the ingress of dust and is waterproof. Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone is (i) protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55; and/or (ii) can be kept under 1.50 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP58).
Stunning shots in any light
Sony’s legendary camera technologies join forces to bring you detailed, bright shots - even in candlelight - using an evolution of Sony's image sensor technology, with a next-generation BSI light sensor. Reduce picture noise while maintaining high resolution with a bright F2.0 Sony G Lens, high-sensitivity Exmor RS for mobile and BIONZ for mobile’s NR, pixel binning and by-pixel super resolution technologies. And with Superior Auto, it’s all taken care of - no fiddling with tricky settings.
Motion detection for blur-free images
Living in the fast lane? Just keep moving - the best camera phone keeps up, with pictures that always come out sharp. The bright F2.0 lens and high-sensitivity sensor mean you can take photos with a higher shutter speed. The BIONZ for mobile image-processing engine has Motion Detection - it chooses a higher shutter speed to capture blur-free images when your subject is moving.
4K - Ultra High Definition video recording
There’s beauty in the detail. Sony’s best camera phone, the Xperia Z2 lets you capture everything you see in brilliant, high-resolution 4K video. With four times the detail compared to Full HD 1080p image quality, your footage is delivered in Ultra High Definition, for unparalleled sharpness and authentic detail. This model supports 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution and playback on a 4K TV or projector using the latest MHL 3.0 connector.
Timeshift video brings the drama
Relive the action in glorious, slow-motion detail. Slow down the moment for a truly cinematic experience with Timeshift video. Shoot at 120 frames per second in HD 720p. Once you’re done recording, just select the best bits and play back each clip at quarter speed. Mark them on a graphical timeline and Timeshift video will do the rest.
The best of Sony’s TV display technology in a smartphone
A display so good you’ll feel like you’re there. The Xperia Z2 is built with the latest Sony TV display technologies optimised for mobile. Brand new Live Colour LED adds colour depth and gradation. And the IPS gives an excellent viewing angle and accurate colours from edge to edge. Paired with a pixel density of 423 pixels per inch, you get pictures that are razor sharp and incredibly bright.
All in a waterproof, dust-resistant and lifeproof design
A premium design that looks good whatever life throws at it, the Sony Xperia Z2 has an impressive IP55/IP58 rating, which makes this slim and sleek smartphone both waterproof and resistant to even the tiniest dust particles. Swimming pool selfies, anyone? Take pictures with the world’s best camera phone while swimming in freshwater for up to 30 minutes. Feel free to dive up to 1.5m, as long as you remember to keep the micro USB port, SIM slot and the memory card slot covers closed tight.
The widest spectrum of colours
Life: Now available in glorious technicolour. The unique to Sony TRILUMINOS Display technology creates a rainbow of rich, natural colours. With Sony's BRAVIA TV expertise, hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, for a more vivid viewing experience and a heightened sense of depth. LEDs emit purer reds and greens, creating a brighter and more uniform light that captures the true colours of the source. From lush landscapes, to natural skin tones, view every detail in astonishingly authentic colour and breathtaking quality. Live Colour LED is a brand new technology integrated only into Sony devices, giving you the world’s deepest and most intense colours on a smartphone or tablet display. This new innovation combines red and green phosphor with blue LEDs and customised colour filters to produce a brighter and more uniform light - capturing true colours without the risk of oversaturation.

I've heard a lot of negatives about the call quality you get on this phone but voices are so clear and loud through the top speaker when I'm on the phone that it actually hurts my ear a bit and I had to turn the volume off of max.
The camera and video recording is great. I was a bit worried at first because the screen looked super dark sometimes but I soon figured out it was because you can set the screen brightness to adjust automatically according to ambient lighting conditions.
The speakers are great. Not exactly HTC One quality but still very good compared to most other phones (destroys my Note 3 speakers).
I'm not a massive fan of the bloated Walkman and Movie apps Sony include but their album app is quite good and loads quickly.
The screen is bright and has good viewing angles; everything looks really crisp. The only thing I dislike is that, despite the ample bezel on the bottom of the screen, there are no hardware buttons, instead you're forced to hand over a small yet noticeable portion of the screen to software buttons. My other gripe is that I find myself accidentally brushing apps placed near the right hand side of the screen quite often.
I don't really know what to say - I've not been able to test it as a daily driver yet, but I feel that it will serve me well. The phone feels solid and looks beautiful.
The lost star is because the flap covering SIM and micro USB socket won't stay shut, mean the waterproof feature can't be trusted.
I rarely open the flap as have a cradle charger, but despite this the problem has arisen. I imagine that it will not be until a future model that the apparent design fault will be fixed.
That said, other than this flaw I love the phone, but the flaw is disappointing.
In case you experience call distortion : I experienced an important problem with the phone. When I made calls, my voice was badly distorted when the other person was trying to listen. It got a lot better if I switched to speaker phone, but still not very good. At first I thought problem must be at the other end, but ltested on several calls to different phones and left voicemails that I have listened to and definitely a major problem. Other than that I found the phone is great, so got replacement from Amazon. I found the problem with my voice being distorted happened again though, with the new phone. I therefore tried a different sim, reverting back to a Vodafone sim from the giffgaff (O2 network) I had moved to. This solved the problem, so looks like some kind of compatibility issue between the giffgaff sim and the Sony z2. The giffgaff sim doesn't cause any problems in my old Galaxy S3... If you experience thisvtypebof problem, it is worth trying a new Sim before returning the phone.
Phone meets my expectations and a bit of a step up from my old Galaxy S3.
Screen is great, with good viewing angles. Keyboard seems easier to use, though spell correction function does not seem to spot two words accidentally typed together without a space.
Seems very responsive and also quick to get to grips with.
Physical quality of the phone is way better than my old S3 (except for flap issue mentioned above). I was a bit nervous of how ergonomic it would be, but I needn't have been. The tweaks done to shape and dimensions from the Z1 have done the trick, and in comparison it is much better to hold.
Put front screen protector on from 3rd party, as only one came in box and I wasn't lucky enough to get application right first time.
I also get a protector for the back to help protect the glass. Pleased I did!
The sound from the front facing speakers is pretty reasonable but not quite as good as I had hoped. Maybe I was expecting too much, but will be fine for audio to videos.
On the charging front, I bought a cheap third party magnetic charging dock for under £9 and it works great. Would recommend one so no need to open the waterproof flap to charge every day - especially given the flaps are the only weak point I have found.
The battery life seems good. For example, took phone off charge 18 hrs ago, had bluetooth and wifi on all day, made a couple short calls, being using email and about an hour on the Internet, followed by watching 2hr film stored on my micro sd and there's still 25% of battery left. Pretty good and better than previous phones...]
Overall, it seems to be a great phone, and pleased I waited for it. I popped my old 64gb Micro sd card in, but pondering over whether to buy and try the new 128gb SanDisk card... Will see.
Couple of extra points: I saw a review just after mine that said you can't write to a micro sd card. In setup there is an option to transfer data from internal memory to a micro sd card you have inserted. Also, you can switch to saving all photos and video footage taken to the micro sd. When it comes to music and films, I usually copy to a micro sd card inserted to my laptop via adapter, so unlikely to check if possible to copy across by USB lead. Consequently, I don't really understand the problem raised by the person leaving one star earlier today. One warning though - when I tried the function to transfer files from the phone to micro SD , the function managed to corrupt many existing photos on the micro SD, so I suggest this function is avoided.
So far really like the function where you can choose to blur backgrounds and keep the main subject in focus. It works surprisingly well. Photos in bright light are great, though dimly lit photos aren't as good as expected. Videos are very good, including 4k ones, though when recording 4k the phone heats up a little, but not a problem.
P.S. As I bought this phone because it was unlocked and sim free I have now found which sim only deal I prefer. I went for a giffgaff monthly deal that as at May 2014 cost £12pm for unlimited data, 250mins, and unlimited texts. It works on O2's 3G network and so far I am very pleased with it. Just mentioning in case, like me, you're looking for a decent Sim only deal. Update: see the call problem I have had with the giffgaff sim... Looks like I will have to give up with it and try a different provider. I ended up getting a Sim only 4g deal with unlimited calls and texts and 5gb of data and Spotify premium for £15pm. Going well...
FINAL UPDATE: AFTER OWNING THE Z2 AND LIKING IT, IT INEXPLICABLY "DIED" ON ME.NO SIGN OF LIFE OR LIGHTS FROM IT WHATSOEVER. I used Amazon instant chat to arrange immediate return for a full refund. Now bought the Z3.
