My initial thoughts based on a few days use. I will update this review in a few weeks with a more detailed review.

It's a 5.5in entry level device, which is quite a challenging area, as doing big screen budget devices well is something of an art. Getting that right balance of compromises is tricky. My initial impressions are good, I think Sony have got it mostly right. The device feels snappy enough considering it's pricepoint, it's got great battery life, the camera is good (again considering the pricepoint), display is fine, It comes with 16GB internal storage, but supports MicroSD upto 256GB.

I was particularly impressed by 4g signal strength, quite alot better than by reference (a Google Nexus 5x), and not just fake bars, it managed solid and speedy connection in areas my other phone struggled with. Either a great 4g radio, or clever antenna design, whatever they did worked well

It's got NFC, so you can take advantage of AndroidPay and it's better than contact less card security.

Downsides, it's a little heavy (but some may see this as an advantage, as it feels very solid), There is no fingerprint unlock, but this is an entry level device, no surprises there.... I wasn't keen on what Sony has done with the UI, Xperias used to be known as close to stock Android, but this felt bloated, alien and lots of additional unwanted apps (which can be removed or disabled). Thankfully, Android supports changing the launcher, and app disable/removal so you can clean up and make it works precisely how you want it to.

I purchased this phone to replace an ailing HTC One M9 that, after one year into a 2 year £50 a month contract, had begun to have problems with battery, screen and charging. Naturally I was wary about a cheaper phone after always having a flagship phone each contract right back the iPhone 3G. Well I needn't have been worried. The phone is great, it's quick and performs all the functions I need it to seamlessly. Spotify, social media apps, videos, Netflix, iPlayer etc etc etc as easily as the HTC I had. Okay the screen isn't 4K and the sound isn't particularly good from the speakers (I stream sound anyway through an Echo or the car bluetooth so who cares?), but seriously on such a small screen does 4K really make that much of a difference? I don't care about 4K video or if the camera isn't pin sharp so if you need all that then a Samsung S8 is for you. If you want a phone that does all the basics well and don't care about advanced features you'll probably pay £700 for or £60 a month but never use then get this phone or one like it.

My son's iPhone 5 was dying from a deteriorating battery so he decided to give this Sony Xperia L1 a whirl. Out of the box, it looks the business - comparable in size to an iPhone 7 Plus with a nice screen and a decent-quality of build for what is a mid-point entry level phone, sub £200, that has expandable storage. There is not too much manufacturer bloatware - always a consideration when buying an Android device. It takes good pictures and, in the hand, it has a very tactile feel. My son likes it a lot and says he will use it until the fabled iPhone 8 is launched. What he doesn't like and whether this is an Apple or Sony fault, who knows, is the time that was required to move from iPhone to Android - clearly, when you are on a particular platform it would seem that the platform providers don't want you to move easily between platforms! All in all a competent, well-built performer, a good choice for a first phone or a phone for someone who doesn't want to pay the premium for a flagship device.

Had this phone a couple of weeks now it really does lern how you use it. It is not a smart phone by any stretch of the imagination but i thought I would treat myself to brand new Sony so far I am really impressed.
