Product Description
No hassle, no difficult settings, just industry-leading noise cancellation* tailored for you and your life.
Industry-leading noise cancellation is made even smarter with personal and atmospheric pressure optimising that adjusts to your individual listening style and your altitude. The WH-1000XM2 are therefore the perfect headphones to fly with.
Be in control of your listening. Hear what’s important with Ambient Sound Control, and adjust sound levels with the Equalizer. What’s more? Smart Listening by Adaptive Sound Control automatically detects your activity such as travelling, walking, and waiting, then adjusts ambient sound settings to you.
Enjoy truly authentic sound. Hear music that stays true to the original recording with High-Resolution Audio. Optimised for High-Resolution Audio, S-Master HX™ reduces distortion and allows you to enjoy all the subtleties in your music. These headphones also include a powerful 40mm driver with Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) diaphragm for handling heavy beats and can reproduce a full range of frequencies up to 40kHz.
Wireless streaming is at its best with LDAC which transmits approximately three times more data (at the maximum transfer rate of 990 kbps) than conventional BLUETOOTH wireless audio, which allows you to enjoy High-Resolution Audio content in exceptional sound quality close to High Resolution Audio.
With an incredible battery life of 30 hours, you can head out on long journeys with confidence of battery not running out. If you do run low on battery, the improved quick charge functionality gives you 70 minutes of play from just 10 minutes of charge - so even if you do run out, you'll have your headphones back up and running in no time.
Combine high-quality sound with the simplicity of voice control. The WH-1000XM3 has dual voice assistant compatibility: it works with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa**. Play music, hear the news, control smart home devices, get answers to questions, and more just by talking to your headphones.
*As of August 31st 2017. According to research by Sony Corporation, measured using JEITA-compliant guidelines in headband style wireless noise cancelling headphones market.

It's true what they say: the Sonys can get hot and slightly uncomfortable. I was a bit wary of the build quality from other reviews and comments but actually I was very impressed from the Sony's build quality. It seems very sturdy and I haven't been so delicate with it (haven't always put it in the case) but it has survived with no noticeable scratches or scuffs. I have gone on a couple of long haul flights with these, they have gotten ever so slightly uncomfortable but not enough to take them off. I have actually used these whilst running. It gets hot but less annoying than in-ears personally. The cups seemed kind of sweat resistant too.
The battery life is amazing. I use it a lot and charge it only once a week. It survived my 16 hr long haul flight plus pre and after flight. As for the Bluetooth connectivity, I had quite a few issues in the beginning. It would connect via Bluetooth but would still play from my phone rather than the headphones. After disconnecting and connecting a few times, it finally started playing ball and now there's no issue at all.
Now to the main point: active noise cancelling and how this compares to the QC35s. I'm gonna be honest, they are both great and as good as each other. I know that's not what people want to hear; they want to hear one is the clear winner. But they are both extremely good. I hate plane noise and they both make it a far more comfortable journey. I really like how it can adjust to the atmospheric pressure (ideal for planes) and with the Headphones app you can adjust how much background noise you can hear. It's just very flexible. You can also choose over sound quality (LDAC) or stability.
I'm really shocked about these headphones. I thought I was gonna return them for the QC35s but they are so good. Only 'bad' thing is I prefer buttons over swiping / gestures for music control. Sony really like gestures.
Last thing I will say is that my partner tried these. He has a set of slightly erm bigger ears and the Sony's were not suitable for him as the ear cups don't go over his ears so he doesn't get the full experience, especially with ANC.
Pros:
+ music quality is fab
+ battery is insane
+ ANC is actually amazing
+ build quality
Cons:
- Costly but it is an investment
- can get hot
- not for everyone's head shape!

I was inbetween this item and the Bose QC35. My partner has the Bose QC35s (v1) so this review compares my experience of the two items.

I purchased these headphones shortly before a trip to Australia and I don't regret the purchase one bit. When I first put them on I was actually a little underwhelmed, mainly due to the comfort. I initially found the headband hurt the top of my head. This is something that I suffer with from a few of my headphones, so it must be the shape of my head but even after a short time with them on, I found the pain too much. I was on the verge of returning then, however after wearing them for a few days in the office, the discomfort started to disappear. Not sure if this was just my head getting used to them or they headband breaking in.
In terms of using them in the office I found them very good. They do an admiral job of keeping the noise of others out, however it's on an airplane they come into their own. During my long haul flight to Oz, they were a god send and I have never been more satisfied with a headphone purchase. They cut out pretty much all the sound from the engines, which can only be heard when no sound is playing and even then it's a low humm. You also can't hear the general chatter of other passengers. So it's needless to say that I think the active noise cancelling is superb. As for the sound? Have no fears, they sound superb. They have nice warm bass but retain great detail and clarity. I own many other quality headphones and I think these come in second behind my Denon D5000's. I also have a set of Sennheiser HD 25 aluminium's, which I absolutely love, but in terms of clarity and detail, they can't compare to XM2's. The reason I love the HD 25's so much is they are a real fun sounding headphone and due to split headband I find them mega comfortable. However they can't compete with the detail these cans produce.
The touch controls are also brilliant and I don't have a problem using them. However they seem to be a bit buggy on some Windows 10 apps. For example the play/pause when using MusicBee is temperamental at best.
It's a bit of an annoyance having to disconnect and reconnect via bluetooth if you want to switch devices, but not the end of the world. I have had hardly any connection dropouts either. In fact during my Oz flight I can't recall it dropping once.
So the only real negative for me is the discomfort on the top of my head, but like I said, this has subsided after prolonged use and probably won't effect most. Other than that, these cans are great and I highly recommend them, especially if you travel a lot.

The noise cancelling on these headphones is outstanding, background noise just (mostly) disappears.
They are comfortable to wear for long periods, and give the most wonderful platform to listen to music on.
I have worn them for a couple of flights, around 3 hours each time, blat out the noise of screaming kids, whining engines etc, and let you listen to music at the volume you want (you don't have to crank the volume up to try to block out other sounds).
I also work in computer server rooms, where I find these headphones come into their own. Noise levels are high, ear defenders required, these do the job of protecting me from high ambient noise levels better than the expensive ear defenders provided. Being able to listen to music as well is a bonus.
Obviously, these headphones are in no sense cheap, but I love them.
The only oddity I have found is the case, and the way the headphones fit into it. You have to fold the ear pieces, which is a little fiddley. I have no idea why they arranged things like that, if the case was just a shade larger there would be no need. I suspect this is the cause of the problems people have had with the headband (jamming them into the case, rather than fitting them in carefully) Still, I love these headphones :-)
