Top customer reviews
First impressions are very good. It looks very classy (passed wife's approval test!!!) although the subtle shiny outside is suitable to fingerprints. The keyboard is amazing (a few weeks back had to return an HP on keyboard issues) and it seems to be very fast. The touch pad works very well and can be customised to your own taste. Comes pre-loaded with loads of sony software, norton antivirus, adobe reader, MS office 10 shell version etc... the normal stuff you would find in any of today's laptops. I have removed a lot of the redundant software and it seems to be rebooting much faster now. It is also very quite even when burning DVDs (yes, as part of the set up you are recommended to burn three recovery disks - No dvd's/cd's are supplied with the manuals which are also very basic and minimal - nowadays everything is online right?)
On the downside the battery performance seems poor - under two and half hours with normal web surfing use but it is expected because of the dedicate video card.
The screen colours are ok but not the brilliant vivid colours as you would expect from a sony laptop (at least the top range) but to be honest I cannot fault it and from what I have seen in PC World etc it is on par with other similar priced laptops.
Power plug to the laptop seems to be proprietary to sony as none of my existing dell/HP chargers floating around the house fit in! So every time I go upstairs I need to bring the sony one along with me otherwise after a couple hours of use I will have to go a get it.
Overall it is a very good laptop and it seems to be good value for money from a reputable brand. Would recommend it,
As usual the service from Amazon was excellent and the laptop arrived quickly a couple of days after ordering (3rd December).
This was to replace a 4 year old Dell laptop. We have had several Dell machines and also have two Apple Mac Pros in the family. So a first time with Sony and what a disappointment Sony turn out to be.
The specification of the machine is really good for the price. My wife also liked the design. The build quality is not great and not what I expect from Sony, but for the price it's OK.
I spent hours setting it up and transferring all her music, photos, data, settings etc and installing all the software packages she uses. I also spent a long time getting rid of the pre-installed software that is clogging up the machine (McAfee, Norton backup, various media tools and much more.).
From the start there was a problem with the letter M on the keyboard. It had to be tapped very hard to make it work, so fast typing was irritating and passwords with an M caused even more irritation. But it could have been simply fixed (or so I thought).
Sony's support site was no use but I eventually found a telephone number to call. The line was very bad and the representative was not very "expert" ... so not a great experience. Eventually they decided they could pick the laptop up and fix it but we would be charged for the repair (a minimum of £60). They confirmed we would be charged in an email.
So I called Amazon who immediately agreed to a full refund. We then went to PC World and bought a new machine, spent a few hours converting all the data, and sent the Sony back.
By insisting on charging for the repair of their faulty machine Sony have lost a customer and now have the cost of repairing the machine anyway, reformatting, reloading all the software and testing it before it can be sold maybe as a refurbished unit. Perhaps they just trash it. Either way it costs them a lot more than a keyboard repair.
They get 3 to 4 stars for the machine when it works and -3 stars for customer (lack of) care and build quality.
The laptop is really well thought out. It looks great and the keyboard is fantasic to use, one of the best on this size of laptops. Feels like good build quality and the screen is impressive too.
I did however count 29 Sony installed bloatware applications which were immidiately removed. Nearlly all were not necessary. One final point to note is that this is a really quiet system, fan noise is minimal and even the bluray drive is quiet. This is the first Vaio I have used coming from 4 previous Dell machines and i'm really pleased!
This model does appear to come with a 500Gb hard disk and the ATI graphics chip - bargain!
It boots up really quick and is easy to setup, thanks to Windows 7.
The web button feature is really handy if you just want to access the interweb.
I'm still getting to grips with it, but so far so good - I'm really pleased.
Only drawback, I would say, is the battery life. I've never had a laptop before so don't know too much about them, but the battery doesn't appear to last too long - between 2 - 2.5 hours.
