Decided to choose this Sony product to go with my Sony smartphone. It's good, the suction cup is the key and this one is really good. I think it's because of the very soft rubber, it allows it to stick to almost anything. It means flexibility as I can now put it on the dash rather than on the windscreen (it will stuck to the windscreen too). I don't need to lean forward too much to put the phone in or take it out. Also not too far if I need to press the screen.
This means you have to fit the phone upside down open the little cover in order to plug in the USB which then sticks out the top in an untidy fashion.
I would have liked at least a holder that allowed the phone to be connected by the magnetic dock connector.
The suction cup is probably the best part to it, it's slightly sticky so it grips like glue to the surface you're putting on, but leaves no residue behind once you're done. The suction cup can then be tightened to grip better with the twist of the clip on it and it stays in place firmly. Because it's sticky it means it can actually stick to near any type of surface, be that the windscreen or even dash - without the need for a plastic circular plate. One does however come with it just in case the sticky suction pad doesn't grip to the surface of your dash, but I've not tried this out yet, plus it does actually stick to my dash well. The plastic plate comes with an adhesive back to place anywhere on a flat surface of your dash if you need it though.
As for the actual cradle that the phone sits in, the two lower grips/arms you see in the picture are sized to work around the power/lock button and the volume buttons so they're still accessible and the third grip/arm at the top just holds the other side in place. Because this is made for the Xperia Z and Z1 and I think the Z Ultra? It does mean that the single arm/grip is adjustable by pulling on it to open it up. This can lead to some frustrations as if it's ease of access you want, it can be a pain and it feels like you could pull it right off as you're sliding it around the phone. You need to make sure you prepare for placing your phone into the cradle and factor it into your journey time, once it's in however it takes no time at all to adjust. The ball joint on the back of it makes it easy to put into whichever angle you like, and it has full 360 control to place in landscape or portrait.
Another little trick they've included in the box is a little piece of cord with a hook on it, this dangles down into the air vents in your car and hooks onto the pipes/innards then the other end hooks around the dock itself, I can only assume this is for anti-theft purposes. So they really have thought of everything.
Other than that this dock/cradle is brilliant, it does it's job brilliantly once in place and you really can't fault it. It stays on my windscreen when not in use and doesn't look too intrusive either. It's minimalist design helps with that. All that's left for me to do now is get a nice long micro USB cable and an aux lead to make sure I can charge my phone on the go as well as listen to my music :)
Update - probably the worst phone holder i've ever seen!!!! After half working for a year, it finally broke by the weight of the phone!!!!
