From the manufacturer
From source to speaker, Sony has united an array of technologies for the ultimate audio experience. For High-Resolution Audio files, the digital amp and specialised tweeters reproduce every subtlety, so you can hear each note as the artist intended. For MP3s, digital processing software upscales compressed music to restore lost detail. The built-in S-Master HX digital amplifier helps bring out the best of your High-Resolution Audio.
Boost your bass with a woofer and dual passive radiators
Get big bass lines from a compact speaker. Dual passive radiators work with a woofer and react to the movement of air through the speaker, artificially creating space in the speaker cabinet. This space allows more air to flow through the speakers, enabling even smaller units to deliver superior sound — especially at low-end frequencies.
2.1 channel system for powerful audio
Get 154 W of powerful sound from a 2.1 ch speaker system. Two mid-range magnetic fluid speakers deliver pure crisp vocals and complex melodies, supported by Wide Dispersion Super Tweeters which produce soaring highs and a wide soundstage. A powerful woofer works with passive radiators for resounding bass. So you can enjoy your music in clear, powerful audio, whatever the volume.
Magnetic Fluid Speakers: clearer, more powerful sound
By eliminating conventional speaker dampers and replacing them with magnetic fluid speaker technology, noise and distortion are significantly reduced creating clearer, more powerful audio than ever before. Originally developed for NASA, magnetic fluid technology lets you fit great-sounding, more efficient speakers in a smaller space – the ideal, wireless compact speaker.
By mounting super tweeters on the front and top of the speaker, Sony has created a large sound field that maintains its quality across a full area. It’s the perfect complement for the high-band energy of your High-Resolution Audio, regardless of speaker position.
High quality wireless streaming
LDAC is a new audio technology from Sony that allows you to enjoy high quality wireless audio via Bluetooth. With 3x the data transmitted, LDAC provides an enhanced wireless listening experience for all your music.
One-touch listening to play instant music
NFC (Near Field Communication) technology removes the need for wired connections and complex set-up sequences. Simply touch your NFC-enabled smartphone or other device to the on-body N-mark and start your music. No NFC? No problem. You can also pair the devices manually in Bluetooth settings.
Smooth surface and clean lines ensure this sleek beauty blend into the background, yet still draws attention for its minimalist refinement. The accentuated perimeter is a signature of Definitive Outline.
ClearAudio+ and DSEE HX enriches your music
Clear Audio+ technology leverages Sony’s expertise in digital signal processing developed over generations of perfecting sound. It delivers a rich, high-quality listening experience. Plus DSEE HX builds on our proprietary DSEE technology, upscaling compressed audio files to a level that’s closer to High-Resolution Audio.
Discreet handling with intuitive controls
The SRS-X99 is sophisticated and simple in both form and in function. A glass top control panel features discreet touch-sensitive buttons, which illuminate when you pass your hand over them. You can also enjoy easy control and Bluetooth pairing without compromising on the minimalist style.
Set your music free with multi-room listening
Fill your home with the sound of your favourite tracks, thanks to multi-room listening. Multi-room feature which includes modes such as the Group mode, where the same music can be enjoyed simultaneously with multiple speakers, and the Single mode where different music can be enjoyed with multiple speakers.
Get well-connected with USB-A and USB-B
Hook up all your favourite devices to the wireless speaker with two types of USB port. A USB-A port is ideal for connecting and charging MP3 players, iPhones and iPads as well as a USB stick, to stream High-Resolution Audio and MP3 files. The second port is USB-B for PC connection, enabling digital playback straight from your music library without any signal loss from the PC.

Top customer reviews
I also have the Srs-x88 in the kitchen and this gives a much broader, deeper sound, which is understandable given the bigger size. It's a genuine hi-fi separates replacement as far as I'm concerned, as long as you give it quality source material, although as a single box it can't replicate the separation I used to get from physically separate speakers. However I'm more than happy to have this on a shelf instead of the separate boxes I used to have around.
Setup was completely painless and I have streamed / connected to it from Fire TV, iPhone, Xperia phone, ReadyNas (DNLA), Windows and mac laptops, without any issues at all. A really great product.
It's sleek and black and stylish and powerful and connectable and it sounds wonderful ~ BRILLIANT.
It's not without a few hiccups but compared to masses of other similarish it's brilliant.
Neatly packaged to protect in transit. Easy to open and unpack and set up. Compared to a Sonic Pana wireless box (check my reviews) its simple to set up and use. SONY Songpal onto iPad and iPhone the simple set up option. Load the App and then use the simple BT connection to the SRS X99 allow it to update and bingo ~ you're off!!
This is how things should work. If you need an hour on the help line the manufacturer has got it seriously wrong!
What does it play from - just about anything including down the wire to the aux socket - old but reliable. Then it has BlueTooth, 2 different USB ports, network socket, Spotify, SongPal throwing from your Apple device, GoogleCast (unknown idea to me), NFC (another Android thing I think) and straightforward wireless. It uses WPS for a really easy wireless set up - and it really does work!
I haven't tried every permutation of every device but all my Apple stuff works brilliantly, so I'm happy.
So what about all the technical stuff? The manual is online so just try searching "SONY SRS-X99 manual" and you can read exactly what it can do and thereby work out it it will do what you want. As for me ~ it does what I want by itself, no wires, no external speakers, no turntable, no CD player, no dual tape decks, no hassle.
Why buy it?
SOUND QUALITY ~ no, it's not as good as my big home system, but it's a fraction of the price and with Spotify Pro I can play just about anything and use ready complied song lists ~ EASY. The glass topped black back looks like a left over from 2001 lying on its side. The controls light up when you need them and there's a good remote control. The sound stage is more limited than if you had some great speakers at a good distance apart ~ this is small, neat, stylish and SOUNDS GREAT. You can take the speaker grill of with the supplied magnets and then your grandchildren can poke the speaker cones and ruin it all in minutes !!!
SONY make a bit of a thing about Hi-Res AUDIO ~ well my ears think that it sounds great and that may well be because of this ~ its a bit hard to tell. The audio is fabulous so I expect this is why. Check out the SONY website for SRS-X99 for all the technical stuff if you want to.
It can very cleverly connect to other SRS boxes ~ like my SRS X88. Why would you bother? Same music/radio in different rooms, no time lag like DAB/FM where you live in an echo! Volume is controllable separately but walking from room to room is seamless in music terms ~ WONDERFUL IDEA.
I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THE SRS-X99 ~ it has limitations (everything does!) but I found them easy to live with. The sound is great and that's what really counts. This is digital goodtimes without wires. If you want a turntable, CD player with all the audio boxes to make it better, a huge amp and two to die for speakers THIS IS NOT FOR YOU !!
Sometimes Songpal (via Note3) gives issues but overall it is working Ok for me. Set up is not difficult at all. I have all my songs in Synology NAS Rack station (mostly 24bit- Hi res including 192k albums - and in FLAC format with very limited 320k MP3). I would say BT, wireless play could be better and line in is a write off (also in X7). I mainly use it with USB-B via foobar and Sony Media Go app with provided USB drivers bypassing my laptop's DAC and it sounds out of the world. So I have stooped using BT, Wifi playing and use DAC path (USB-B). I have tested via my Fiio (E17k) and OTG on Note 3 and same excellent result.
So do not judge on this unit unless you have checked paying via USB-B. This is the best somewhat portable speaker system out there for Hi-Res audio if you couple with correct input source
Firstly, it is a substantial piece of equipment. It is heavy and has the build quality you would expect from a high end Sony product.
Secondly, it is easy to set up. The app really does help and I found it easy to connect other devices both directly and via the ether.
Thirdly, the sound quality is good. As I said, I don't have massive experience in this area - but I could detect a difference compared to the usual speakers that I have to use.
It is a considered purchase and it is the sort of thing that you might want to test out in a showroom before committing to actually part with cash. But I think it is well worth putting it on your list of possibles.
