When deciding on an e-book reader you might be concerned that Sonys don't offer wireless or 3G connectivity to d/l books on the move (like the Kindle). While this may be an issue for some, its not for me - I'm quite capable of loading up the reader with enough books to last me months, so going away on holiday and getting stuck for something new to read will never happen. I also find the font easier on the eye than on the Kindle (it seems slightly different), although this is why I would always suggest people try and compare for themselves.
It reads multiple formats and its flexible for viewing pdf format files with little fuss. Its easy to change the size of the reading font to get the best for you and to organise your books into collections. Its also dead easy to get books on it. If you can copy files around into folders on your PC, you can put files on a Sony reader. Or use the software that comes with it. Or d/l free Calibre software which will convert any e-book format into any other and then load them onto your device for you.Read more ›
I love this Sony Reader. I was given a Kindle for my birthday as I had wanted an ereader primarily for my OU coursework which is mostly in PDF format. I found the PDF feature on the Kindle a total pain in the neck, and was unable to change the font size, zooming was a pain etc etc. So my boyfriend is now using the Kindle and I have this Sony, and it's great.
You can change the font size on PDF's, the zoom feature is much more user friendly, in fact I find the whole reader very user friendly and really like the touch screen. I was a bit worried about a 5" screen, but to be honest I find it easier to read books from the Sony than the Kindle as it isn't as cumbersome and doesn't feel so clunky. I like the fact that I can put pictures on it for the screensaver. I don't miss WIFI as the Kindle didn't work with our connection and I want to read with it, not surf the web.
All in all I'm very impressed. It is more expensive than the Kindle, but it feels sturdier, its dinky and very user friendly and great with PDFs. I think Sony should lower the price and include a mains charger (it does include a USB charger). I got mine from Waterstones, but they seem to have disappeared from their website at the moment.
I still have my Sony, I read from it every day and it's been fine. I would still recommend it for reading book, I haven't had any problems at all! Its been all over the place and hopefully will last a while yet :)
There are 12 different dictionaries, so it is ideal for my daughter. No matter how much I try to tell her the importance of knowing different meanings, she just doesn't like to move away to a dictionary when reading a book. I can understand that, because who would like to do that for a one unknown word when reading through an interesting story?. But, with this one, it's just a double tap on the word. How easy is that. She is also learning some other foreign languages and this will help her on that aspect too.
My only worry before go for this one is the display size (as it is only 5 inch). But after having it for couple of weeks now, I can safely say that it doesn't matter because you can increase font size of your liking. It will simply increase the no of page turns for large fonts, but I don't mind that (just a press of a button or slide a finger, not a big deal anyway).
Did not bothered too much about wifi ect, as I can load around 1200 eBooks on the device on it's 2GB storage.
There are so many other cool features in this device and all seems to be working fine as well. Highly recommend this to anyone whose main objective is to read anytime, anywhere.
PS: One word of advice though. I had an issue on my order as I ordered it from Amazon marketplace. Since the seller is in Channel Island, Amazon did not specified seller's location.Read more ›
