The new generation premium XB40EX in-ear headphones from Sony may be small and light but they serve up a massive, rich sound. Pop the luxury buds into your ears and get ready for the deepest, smoothest thumping bass yet. Dance, electronica, R&B, hip hop, dub, drum and bass, reggae – they’ll all be transformed by the exhilarating delivery of the XB40EX. The introduction of a 13.5mm EXTRA BASS (XB) driver unit means low frequencies are smooth and tight, while a high power neodymium magnet produces a warm, clear mid-range. Total enclosure is achieved thanks to a new vibe structure which has a tightly sealed acoustic design, making you feel like you’re right there on the dance floor or at the front of a gig. It works the other way round too, creating noise isolation so you won’t share your music with other people. With impressive sound quality taken care of, the XB40EX in-ear headphones boast a design that combines style with practicality. Silicone earbuds come in a range of sizes to provide the perfect fit. They’re attached to brushed metal fascia which create a sleek finish, making these the ‘phones to be seen in, wherever you go.
The winning combination of great sound, stylish design and total comfort means music on the move has never been so enjoyable.

The perfect balance of sounds
A huge frequency response range, from an ultra-low 4Hz right up to 24,000Hz, is guaranteed by a neodymium magnet for crisp mid-range and treble sounds. That means you can be sure frequencies are pleasingly balanced as well as accurately reproduced, and the subtleties of a track are revealed. Lose yourself in your music and reduce sound leakage with the XB40EX’s new direct vibe structure. This tightly sealed acoustic design allows for a high level of sound isolation. It’s made possible by the integration of gaskets – a rubbery material – and sealing components which ensure that all the sounds now reach your ears. If it’s volume you’re after, super-sensitive 105 microwatts means these in-ear headphones can output spectacularly loud sound.
Get closer to your music with EXTRA BASS
Sony didn’t call these in-ear headphones EXTRA BASS (XB) for nothing. Powerful new technologies are the secret behind the XB40EX’s ability to recreate the club atmosphere with deep extra bass. Engineered exclusively by Sony, these in-ear headphones feature a 13.5mm driver, which includes a newly developed long-stroke diaphragm. Highly corrugated and hard-wearing, the diaphragm enables the reproduction of a smooth thumping bass line. The driver’s also been designed to keep vibration to a minimum so the sound you hear is impressively clear.

Listen for longer in stylish comfort
When you’re wearing in-ear headphones you need them to be so comfortable you barely notice them. The EX40EX comes with three sizes of hybrid silicone in-ear headphones (S/M/L) so you can be sure of finding the perfect fit. They’re attached to brushed metal fascias which are around 4cm long, making a subtle yet distinctive style statement.
A durable and lightweight Y-type cord completes the package. It comes in three different colours, so you can choose the one that matches your look, and it’s 1.2m long, letting you move around and mix it up without getting in a tangle. Put all this together and the XB40EX in-ear headphones are still amazingly light at around 9 grams, making them easy to wear, and carry. And as an added little extra there’s a carry pouch, so you can pop your XB40EX’s in any bag and know they’re safe.

I've been reluctant to replace them as the sound reproduction through them was literally (and I realy do mean literally) unbelievable for something so small and neat. My understanding of the physics of audio tells me that it should not be possible to reproduce bass so low and defined with a tiny driver like this.
However the EX71s have long since seen their best days (thrown in a bag or pocket, even with the protective ear-bud case has taken its toll) so I took the plunge and bought these.
The fit in the ear is similar to the EX71s - again you will need to play around with the different silicone bud sizes (three are supplied) to get the best snug, deep fit.
These are NOISE ISOLATING headphones, ie not active noise reduction headphones. This means that it is the good fit in your ear that excludes external sounds.
When wearing these I sometimes get the feeling that they are starting to fall out. I never had this with the EX71s. It turns out that they are not actually falling out at all and are a really good fit. What is causing that feeling is the fact that the solid arm protrusions below the buds on this model sometimes catch on my ear lobe because the cable has snagged on a collar or zip or something! The buds always stay firmly in place and I'm getting used to the feeling of the buds falling out.
With the correct buds and a good fit the sound reproduction is superb. The bass is possibly very very slightly less punch than the EX71s, but still incredible. You can get some very very low frequencies out of these and there is no noticable crunching - the bass is nice and smooth. Top end, as is almost always the case with earphones, is fine - small drivers do high frequencies easily so they should be.
All in all the sound is very very good - and that's what I wanted most.
The build quality of these is definitely superior to the EX71s. The cables are thicker on the whole, and a flat rather than the EX71s very thin round cable. The clip on the cable is OK and the strain reliefs look pretty sturdy.
One thing important to note, and something that was a big disappointment for me at first, is that these headphones have symetrical cords - that is the left and right ear-pieces are on the same length of cord from the main cable. I have always preferred asymetric as this allows the headphones to be taken out of your ears and left slung around the neck.
With these if I took them out (to take a phone all or speak to someone in a shop or whatever) I was leaving them hanging down in front of me from the clip and they would snag on things.
I have, however, found a solution to this. Becuase of the solid vertical protrusion below the buds (sorry, I down know what else to call the bit between the buds themselves and the cable) these will sit happily behind your ears when your not actually listening through them. (You sit them behind your ears with the buds facing forward poking forwards over the top of your ear - you can hear the music faintly but can then hear external sound without problems and without ripping your new heaphones!).
One final note, they do not come with an extension cord - but the supplied cord is long enough for most uses - but they do come with a litlle carry case which is good enough quality and keeps your spare silicone buds safe.
All in all a nice replacement for some sadly retired EX71s.
But These Sony's are fantastic: Bass is deep and well defined, vocal's are clear and pronounced (Mid's) and trebble is crisp and detailed but not overbearing. When cranked up even to very high there is no noticable distortion even through my laptops Creative X-Fi Fatality soundcard! Music sounds live, films sound epic and gaming sounds superb, so all in all very good all rounder earphones.
-brilliant build quality, especially the cable which is strong and surprisingly tangle resistant.
-I love the overall style of them, hard hitting and to the point
-BASS is fantastic for somthing so small, only my BIG open type Sennheiser HD485's beat them and not by much.
-They breathed life to my 5yr old Creative Zen MP4 player!
-for less than £30 you would be very hard pressed to find anything this good, let alone less than £100!
-Even More BASS would be amazing but nion impossible for such small cans.
-People spend simililar or a lot more money on drastically inferior earphones and headphones!
Overall These sony extra bass earphones offer exceptional sound at a crazy entry level price! and with better build and sound quality than many £200+ sets (I should know I work for Currys)they are an absolute steal, well done Sony!
And their price only fell 10GBP in two and a half years, if anything that tells you about their awesome, inimitable sound (and build) quality!
The cable is flat, not round. This helps a lot to avoid tangling and makes them seem much stronger and better quality. The outer parts are metal, which looks nice.
They came supplied with a little black pouch that zips closed, inside there are two mesh elasticated sections so you can store the spare ear buds and clothing clip, without them falling out every time you take the earphones out.
Good value, would recommend them highly.
