Product description
Manufacturer's Description
The MDR-V500DJ closed supra-aural headphones provide top-end comfort and sound quality. The headphones are part of Sony's Studio Monitor Series and are built with high-end materials using advanced sound engineering. They are designed to meet the demands of professional and high fidelity users. Sony's closed type headphones allow only a limited amount of ambient noise into the ear canal, giving your attention fully to the music. The padded earcups fit comfortably, hour after hour. For those who like to use the headphones for single-sided monitoring, these MDR-V500s come with swivel earcups. The earcups are also reversible, and have been designed to be comfortable for on-shoulder use. The supra-aural design is engineered for excellent listening comfort. With this design, the earcups rest lightly on the ear, while the driver units are positioned along the ear canal for ideal sound transport. The wide, molded headband distributes the headphone's weight evenly. The headphones are foldable for easy storage and portability; when folded, the headphones will easily fit in a backpack or purse. The three meter cord (ten feet) is made of oxygen-free copper wiring for maximum conductivity and minimal noise.
Sony has installed several key features to these headphones to enhance their sound quality. The forty millimeter drive units delivers a deep bass sound and a wide dynamic range (the frequency range extends down to 10 Hz.) Both the stereo mini-plug and the UniMatch phone plug are gold-plated to make sure sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones' high conductivity and low noise. The neodymium magnets allow for superb power at a minimum size; these magnets provide more magnetic energy than other inferior magnets. Finally, the PET diaphragm works to deliver low distortion.
Excellent fit, excellent compatibility, excellent portability and excellent sound: these headphones fit the bill for a sound professional.

The drawback for me is that the percussion can be pretty jarring on some music if you have it on a reasonable volume. It works great for bass drums, but for less soft sounds it can be quite painful to listen to. Also, while serviceable, the bass isn't particularly proficient in the mix, so some R'n'B and heavily produced Hip Hop can sound less powerful than it does on a big sound system.
Overall I'm pleased with them though - and one last note is that they come with a converter, so they'll plug into both your MP3 Player and your home sound system. Don't make the mistake I did and buy a converter before they arrive.
I have a particularly large head -- and surprisingly, they fit quite well with a large sway in terms of the sizing available. I have not worn them for more than an hour or two at a time -- and given that time period, I cannot see that they'd be very comfortable to wear on a long-term basis. One's ears tend to get quite warm while wearing them and they clamp on to one's head quite firmly.
Overall, I'd recommend them to people though -- the niggles tend to be few -- particularly for the overall quality of the sound & construction.
Apart from that, it's a shame that the sturdy build also means that my ears' cartilage can suffer within minutes of wearing the headphones. I've tried several adjustments, and I find it's a bit hit & miss. So is it my ears that are at an awkward height? In fact, I have had a few occasions when there was no pain at all whilst wearing them, but that's been too inconsistent.
Still, the pleasure I get from the sound makes up for the occasional pain.
I bought mine five years ago and they still rock - the pivots are way looser than when new, but that was always going to happen, but everything else is as new.
Great sound, great sound insulation, very comfortable.
Apart from splashing £150 on Bose, these ARE the headphones you want to buy.
They look and feel expensive. The sort of headphones you would find lying around next to a laser-disc player BACK IN 1996...
proper old-style sony but with a more compact shape and size.
What Im trying to say is that they are COOL cool.
(I hate all of these headphones out there designed for posers.)
anyway
The sound from them is fantastic. You get the sense that you are there with the band in the studio. Its AWESOME.
One important thing to point out is that they have a spiral cord. This works out well for me because they are for my laptop and now
I dont need to worry about pulling it off the table and away to the toilet with me...
If you are willing to spend around £40 for a pair of skullcandy, then dont. Go for these. You wont regret it.
