Like a lot of people in the reviews that I have read, I was looking to replace my MDR-ED21's which seem to have been inexplicably discontinued by Sony. The fact that the MDR-ED12's were half the price is both good and bad. Good for obvious reasons and bad because like most tech, you get what you pay for and that rule certainly applies here. Although the technical spec is almost identical, specifically the 16mm drivers and the frequency range, they sound no-where near as good as my MDR-ED21's. I still have my old ED21's (I was actually looking for a back-up pair as they won't last forever) and did a test with a basey dance track, at the same volume level for both earphones, which produced a notably different sound.
Since the spec is almost identical I think it is down to the poor design of the plastic cone section where the wire goes into. You cannot grip it properly and therefore cannot push the earphone into the correct position to stop general sound and, most importantly, base leakage. Result, a much less powerful sound, especially if you're a house/trance lover.
Come on Sony, why replace an almost perfect earphone with something so much more inferior?

i bought these to replace MDR-ED21's which had broken and i wanted the groove thing, they have the same sound quality for a lower price which is excellent, but the rest of the product is worse. the cable feels really cheap and plasticy and the earphone is very large compared to the 21's, which means that you can hear the wind catch on the earphone, but not a problem for me. it also feels cheap to the touch, but doesn't look it, but that's not the end of the world!

update: been using these for about a month now and i would say that the cord constantly twists and gets caught up which is VERY annoying as it ends up pulling the earphone out. - 1 *

First of all I should state that I bought my 3rd pair of these recently and only paid just over half of the advertised price at the time of writing (£7.99 compared to 15.99) so I think i got good value but the price does seem to fluctuate widely so pick when you buy a pair wisely. Secondly, even at 16 quid you are not going to get the highest spec earphones in the world are you, so you need to be realistic in what you want them for. They don't cut out much in the way of background noise so they are not much good if you want to listen to spoken word on a noisy commute but for music you can turn them up and they don't leak much to annoy fellow passengers. In the gym, out walking or on the bike they work for me as they seem to stay in my sweaty ears pretty well (too much detail there perhaps) but as I don't jog I couldn't say if they will remain in place when running but I doubt they will. Acoustically I am not technically savvy enough to talk about "high end" or "bass input" or whatever but as i use mine mainly for audiobooks they work perfectly well and if I want pristine music reproduction I'll listen at home. Some sacrifice has to be made for portability after all. I use mine daily and my last pair lasted about a year so hopefully I'll get the same this time. There are loads of better earphones out there but for value, and owing to the fact that I don't get on with phones with earbuds (long story involving bud, tweezers and olive oil. I won't go into it...) these will do for me.

I'm one of those who had to get these as the next best option to those infamously great earphones that Sony used to do. You know the ones I mean! MDR-ED21LP!!!!

They do fit in your ear and feel the same way as those lovely earphones, and although the in-ear bass is still almost the same, the overall quality doesn't feel great as a lot of the other reviewers said. They feel a little odd in your ear though and the back part that sticks out looks a little silly. The cable is very thin and doesn't feel like it'll last a long time, but still, this is the next best thing to those fantastic earphones that Sony STUPIDLY discontinued and replaced with this cheaper pair! :-)

Only purchased as alternative to in earbuds. They're "Okay", fit in secure, but okay for people who aren't interested in heavy bass and high pitched trebles, not the best in it's price range, but not the worst. Just average nothing special at all. Opting back for new set of "in earbuds" because they generally give you a better sounding experience and more bass.

Though the same earplug as the fab Sony MDR-ED21LP, they just fit badly in the ear itself. Very thin long cord, not as exclusive as other sony headphone products, but for the price of 8 quid it is probably an okay investment. Quality of sound not outstanding. It feels like a plastic product. 2 stars, one for working the second for giving me music when the other pair crashed.

I bought these for use with my mp3 player when in the office or walking about, and for this purpose they are excellent and a great price.
Yes, they are not 100% noise cancelling, but that is exactly what I wanted as I still needed to be able to hear what was happening in the office.
But they have got excellent sound quality and the bass is great for headphones of the size and price.
Would be 5 stars if they stayed in a little better when running.
