I have had this headphones since Saturday 29th November I ordered them using amazons evening delivery via city sprint they should of arrived on that evening but instead due to the courier giving the delivery driver the items Late they were not delivered on the Friday evening! And therefore never arrived until the following Saturday morning! Not good city sprint! Amazon refunded the delivery in full

Anyways on to the headphones I can't tell you how brilliant these are! I'm using them for listening to music on the move via my Sony NWZ-A15 and Fiio E18 portable headphone amp for music on the move. All my music is ripped in CD quality 16 bit FLAC files a must or higher for these cans! They will show up poor quality compressed music! The instruments are clear defined and seperated. Bass is nice and not too overpowering a big improvement again over the MDR-1R

My home setup is via my Sky+ box/blu ray player/PS3 and I'm using a Topping TP21 Desktop amplifier! From both outputs the sound these produce is brilliant all audio is clear and separated I'm also hearing extra detail in my fav shows that I've not heard before!

These are great headphones and yes they are a major improvement over the MDR-1R of which I had two pairs both were returned due to the cable rattling which Sony have fixed with these! Only thing to note about the cable is Sony have fitted a new 4 tier connector on the headphone jack end which means you cannot use a standard 3.5mm extension cable if you feel the cable is not long enough. The sound is also so different on these to the MDR-1R! These are the best pair of over ear headphones I've ever had!

There also a brilliant pair of ear muffs they keep your ears nice and warm! Although I do have to readjust them ever so often to let air in!Read more ›

Sony MDR-1A, the successor to the Sony MDR-1R - are they worth the extra £35 ?

I have had a pair of the Sony MDR-1R headphones for about 8 months and use mainly for use with game consols
(via TV optical out and then a DAC direct to headphones or an amp)
I have also use them with a iPod touch and Nano
These are the most comfortable headphones I have ever had and the sound is good/excellent

I decided to get a pair to the newer Sony MDR-1A as I now have a hi-res player and thought I'd give it a shot

Differences:
a. They've fixed the rattling connection point that was an issue with the Sony MDR-1R
b. The cushions are larger - so are supposed to be more comfortable (but not for me*)
c. The headband while being very similiar looks a bit thinner to me, but is just as comfortable
d. The cans fold the opposite way to the Sony MDR-1Rs in that you can hang them round your neck and they fold inwards towards your chest
- the Sony MDR-1Rs folded outwards
e. Most important is the different quality of the sound - it IS markedly different, with a deeper and fuller tone - much better in my view.
I hear most headphones need about 100 hrs use to 'bed in'. This seems to be the case with these -
at first I thought the bass was a bit 'boomey' - but it got better after a few hours.

*One slight issue:-
For me, these are not as comfortable as the Sony MDR-1Rs
They have made the cushions bigger which means less room for your ears inside the cans - this means the air inside the cans heats up quicker and can be distracting.
Although, after 3 weeks now I think the cushions are becoming shaped to my head so are getting more comforable by the day.Read more ›

I bought these to go with my Sony high resolution player - they're a revelation ! Even my older music sounds clearer , and my new hi-res purchases are amazing ! They're also very comfortable to wear , I have a small head and most headphones don't sit well but at their smallest setting these are perfect , highly recommended .

I purchased the MDR-1R (Sony MDR-1R Ultimate Over-Ear Stereo Headphones, Black) a couple of years ago for a heavily discounted price (£90, down from £200 at the time) . Despite having 'higher-end' headphones available, I've come to prefer their comfort, isolation and non-fatiguing sound. They're particularly good in the office where the high level of isolation means I'm not disturbing other staff (or being disturbed by exterior noises).

I've been using them primarily with the Sony PHA-1 (SONY portable headphone amplifier PHA-1), a great portable DAC/AMP that pairs very well with them (as you'd expect, both being from Sony's 'High Resolution Audio' line).

When this MDR-1A came up on Amazon's lightning deals, I took the opportunity to grab a potential upgrade at even an lower bargain price than the MDR-1R, on the assumption that Sony had fixed the minor hardware/design annoyances of the 1R without changing the sound.

I was wrong. The 1A model sounds considerably different to the 1R, as various other reviewers have noted.

They maintain and extend the 'warm' signature of the old model, while adding a degree of clarity and 'sharpness' I'd not expected. Bass is tighter and more pronounced. The soundstage seems wider and overall, I feel the 'grin factor' is higher with the new model. It always takes me a few days to get accustomed to new headphones, but I do feel these are an improvement; not that the previous model was poor in any way.Read more ›
