Conclusion

When it comes to getting high image quality from a small, full-frame camera, the Sony a7R has it wrapped up. It's worth the higher price and pairs well with Sony's impressive FE lenses.

Reasons to buy

  • Very good image quality when shooting Raw
  • Compatible with a huge range of legacy 35mm camera lenses
  • Large, high resolution electronic viewfinder
  • Very good video quality and feature set
  • Wi-Fi with NFC

Things to consider

  • Autofocus can be slow in low light
  • Poorly designed Auto ISO feature
  • High-res sensor requires dedicated approach to shooting
  • JPEG quality not as good as we'd like to see
  • Limited selection of native lenses

The A7R shares all the niggles and annoyances of the A7. While each person will have their own set, mine are pretty much the same as most other users:- Terrible battery life, awkward position of the Menu and Magnify buttons, no flash, poor position of shutter release (fixed in A7 II), few lenses available.

Everything on this camera is slow. Dont get one to shoot anything that moves, but for static subjects, such as landscapes and studio shots, it comes into its own. It also requires a more steady and systematic approach, more methodical, this isnt a point it and shoot type of camera, you really need to give full consideration to creating a solid base, either through the use of a tripod or keeping shutter speeds up higher than normal, else you will get some softness due to camera shake. Supposedly that is due to the high pixel count of the sensor, I am not technical enough to know, but I have found that this isnt a camera to turn on Image Stabilisation and forget shutter speeds.

You WILL need at least one, and maybe even two or three spare batteries, so budget for those, also more than likely a fast SD card. Mine which has been fine in other cameras such as the A7, RX10, is creaking when shooting Raw, and one really needs to shoot Raw with this camera.

However, I can forgive it its failings due to the amazing Dynamic Range and detail it captures. The Image Quality is superb. While I havent owned the top of the range Nikon 810, the reviews say the IQ of the A7R is up to it, and I believe it, and for half the price and size and weight.

I have mine exclusively for landscape photography and have paired it with the Sony 16-35 F4 Zeiss lens, and I can confirm its a terrific setup for this type of photography.

On paper, the Sony A7R would seem to be a photographer's dream come true: a well-specified 36Mp camera, neither too big nor too heavy that it hinders easy portability. So - does the camera manage to match these early expectations...? Here's what I think:

PROS:

+ As of October 2014, the Sony A7R is indeed the smallest, lightest, and least expensive 36Mp camera that you can buy. In fact, the A7R is one of the most affordable full-frame cameras currently available on Amazon

+ My camera was produced at Sony's manufacturing facility in Thailand, but I'm happy to report that the build quality is generally very good. The camera's bodywork is made mainly from magnesium (light, tough, and expensive!), with all the major buttons, dials, and ports being appropriately weather-sealed. However, the paintwork on my camera does have a slight 'orange peel' finish to it, while the plastic battery compartment cover (which you will be opening and closing very frequently, I can assure you!) doesn't look or feel particularly sturdy

+ Providing you optimise the camera's settings and use a sharp enough lens, the 36Mp CMOS Exmor R sensor inside this camera should be capable of registering incredible amounts of fine image detail. (If you stick to a linear pixel minimum of 300ppi, it should be possible to produce acceptably sharp and detailed whole-frame prints up to 24" x 16" (A2) without resorting to the lottery of interpolation/resampling)

+ Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras usually boast reliably high levels of exposure and focusing accuracy (because the image is assessed directly from the sensor, rather than a separate CAM), and this little Sony soon proves it's no exception to the rule.

I've a real love/hate relationship with this camera. I love its size and (theoretical) lens flexibility. I hate its image processing and the fact that I rarely get a decent image out of it.

I also use a D800e and a 1Dx and if I want guaranteed results I'll use these and a lens with a big front end. It's almost impossible to get a bad shot with a 1Dx and the 200mm f2.

And before you start with the: "you can't compare these to the Sony blah blah.." I'd point out that the Leica M9 also gives far superior results to the A7R.

The trick to the A7R seems to be very good light. Under good studio lighting and given enough time to focus by zooming in via the C1 button it is possible to achieve excellent resolution and sharpness. My best results were with huge entrance aperture lenses like the Noctilux f0.95.
Under poor light it is hopeless. I've tried to shoot fantastic sunsets with my A7R and the results are not good - very noisy images.
Everything needs to be done in RAW or .ARW as Sony calls it.

The cheap optional remote control is very useful and this is a fantastic video camera.

The images I've seen from the Fuji X100 are much better than anything I've seen from the A7R and I think this is all down to the software because the Fuji has a much smaller sensor.

If Sony could realise the potential of the sensor with better in-camera image processing the A7R could be a winner.

UPDATE

I took the A7R out to shoot some landscapes and it seemed to go haywire. The flip screen was refusing to display anything and the camera was switching itself off and on. When I finally got it to take some pics these were a deep blue colour cast.
I gave up and switched it off. I was using a genuine Sony battery with 90% charge.
