We went for a very extended trip about two years ago and bought a few cameras for it - one Nikon DSLR, one Leica and this one. This one was meant to be the back-up one that we'd take to places where we needed something a little lighter than the DSLR but still wanted a zoom (the Leica is fixed).
We pretty soon worked out that this camera, aside from a few very specific conditions, was by far our favourite one and became our go-to camera.
- The focusing is mind-blowingly fast
- It's more robust than the other ones (the Leica broke, the Nikon didn't cope with humidity that well)
- The image is as sharp as our full-frame DSLR
- It's the perfect size. Bigger than a phone so you have better sharpness and better grip, but small enough you never hesitate to take it with you (DSLR users will know what I mean...). And having your camera with you is the key to making great photos...
Yes there are some drawbacks.
- The standard lens is great, but the zoom one (55-210) is a little weak (the lack of image stabilisation may be to blame).
- It struggles a bit in very low lights.
Still, for the price, it's an extraordinarily good camera. And go for this one rather than one of the newer models - they are 50%-100% more expensive and add little other than quiet modes (this camera is not noisy in the first place).
