An excellent piece of kit that makes night time filming amazingly clear. It says not all Sony Handycams are compatible so you need to make sure yours is, but the IR light itself is battery operated and self contained - you could always hold on to it and point it in the general direction you want illuminating!
The IR booster means that instead of just being able to see 5m in front of you, you can see up to 25m clearly (more I'm sure but I've not tested it beyond that).

I have a Sony DCR-HC37 Camcorder and found that the night shot mode was not very good. I saw this IR light and even though my make of camera is not shown in the compatability list, it works excellently with the arm bracket! Now I can go Ghost Hunting and see further in the dark. Highly reccomended.

The HVL-IRM is a light-weight, infra-red lamp from Sony that attaches to a camera or camcorder with Night Shot capability and greatly extends the range at which shots can be taken at night. I use one on my DSC-V1 and not only does it extend its range in total darkness, it also throws a much wider beam than the light incorporated in the camera, allowing you to capture much more around the main focus of the shot. I've never taken pictures of things any further than around 20 yards away, so I can't comment on whether or not Sony's claim of a 100-foot range is accurate, but it seems plausible, although the quality of the shot does deteriorate the further away the subject is.

With the light you also get a metal brace for attaching it to the underside of a camcorder or into the tripod hole of your camera, allowing you to use a separate dedicated flash if you need to. Although Sony don't provide any batteries with the light, you can use either 2 AAs or one of Sony's rechargeable camera batteries - even more handily, you can insert both at the same time and switch between them as the light's power button has settings for both. It seems that you get a much longer run time using rechargeable camera batteries than AAs so if you have one spare it seems wise to use it. The only thing you might need to consider is that the light isn't controlled by the camera - you switch it on separately and have to remember to switch it off after use. It would have been nice if the light turned on and off with the camera as it's easy to forget about it and have the batteries run down, but this is really only a minor inconvenience.

LIke most who buy this model, i use it for paranormal work and find it fantastic, for all of us without a hot shoe slot on our camcorders, this is a must and as you see in the picture, just screws onto the tripod hole on base of the camera. Our group uses only SONY gear, as all models have nightshot, but as the HDD models are smaller than the older bulky house brick Hi8 and Digital8 models, they only have the one ir sensor other than the two in the analogue ones. So having this with your camera makes nightshot a joy with its eight brigthtness adjustable ir lights. You can either run it off of two AA batteries or off one H series battery. You can have both in it as the AA's fit into the light via a removeable cover, and once its shut, the H series battery slots into the back, then you just slide the switch to A for the AA's, then once their spent you slide the switch to B for the H battery. All in all a great piece of kit that makes our work much easier (and brighter!).
