This is a long one but hopefully it will help you make a decision.

I bought this particular model for a number of reasons, the first being a loyalty to Sony because so many other of my electrical goods are Sony ones (my old stereo, dvd players, my sat nav, my HD TV and my previous handycam) and also because it's a good price for a very good product (I don't work for Sony by the way, I just think they are very reliable).

A second reason is that my old camcorder is a Sony (using mini DV tapes) and I never had any problems with it (including survivng an accidental fall from a table) so I was quite happy to buy a new Sony.

The final reason was that this is costs the same or less than the older SR5 model but has many more features - so that kind of sealed it!

It was a bit intimidating at first, looking at this thing out of it's box and wondering how easy (or not) it would be to use but rest assured, Sony's legendary ease-of-use is definitely in place here. Also, it feels good! What I mean by that is you can feel quality in your hands, and this has it! I would recommend reading not only the printed 'quick start' guide that comes with the product but also print off the Acrobat pdf full guide that is on one of the DVD's. This will give you much more info on the features of the camera.

It comes with a 'docking station' for charging but this is not necessary as you can charge the handycam without it. The docking station seems difficult to fit but is an advantage in securing the camera and not allowing it to fall over (good when you have kids running around).

I had never used a video camera with a hard drive before but this thing is a 'hybrid', i.e. it uses 2 recording formats, the hard drive and a memory stick (not included).

I only received this item this week and, so far, it has been flawless!

It's a good looking unit and not too big. It turns on nice and quickly and the hard drive is ready to go immediately. The picture quality is perfect, as you would expect, and it even records all the sound in Dolby Digital 5+1 - all from the integral microphone.

In the highest True HD resolution it will record nearly 5 hours on the hard drive and the camera function is spot on with a good xenon flash. Crucially, you can watch your footage back and easily edit it or simply turn it back onto camera mode and start recording with no fear of taping over anything. Add to this the clever face recognition software, which works a treat, and you can even select bits of footage by the faces that it has spotted - very clever!

All in all, for £550, it is a steal and worth mentioning that it was only released in February so the technology will be cutting edge for a little while yet.

I received the Sr10e from amazon a little over a week ago. The supplied accessories are very good.
The camcorder records well and to a high quality. It does have some small issues with focusing but only in the odd case.

Battery life , recoding in full hd with auto settings is 99 minutes with supplied battery. Battery charging is very quick with a full cycle in around 1 hour.

This works fine with imovie 08 and a 2.0ghz intel imac with 1gb ram (2gb+ is reccomended though)

I have not tried the supplied software as it is un necessary when using a mac.

The supplied dock is very good quality and is very easy to use.

Still photos are of average quality but that's to be expected!

All in all my first impressions are that this is an excellent camcorder at a great price!

This camera has been such a great purchase. I was unsure about the file format and whether it would work on my macbook but it seems like this was created for mac as well as windows. Imovie 08 easily imports the video and i cant say how pleased i am. The video quality is visually stunning. I still find myself with my mouth open just gawping as the quality of the video.

Edit - After doing prior research i have found that AVCHD is only recognised on Intel Macs

Had this now for just over a month and used it in a variety of locations. Indoor performance is OK - still way better than any SD cameras I have owned previously, but outdoor and decently-lit scenes are simply mind-blowing.

Here are the key points:

- Wonderful colour and definition.
- Well built and comfortable to hold
- Easy to operate
- Simple full-auto mode
- Enough manual controls to provide fun for people who wish to experiment with settings
- The docking station - convenient connectivity

Downsides - no manual focus ring, mic input or headphone socket, but these are all things you would normally pay a lot more for.

And it will connect to an HD TV in HD resolution without a mini-HDMI cable - if your HD TV has a component video input, this camcorder comes with a component video cable which support HD resolutions.

Overall - just brilliant.

The camera works excellently and very impressed with the recording quality. My only regret is there is no viewfinder. I find filming outdoors with the sun behind it is virtually impossible to see what you are shooting on the on the LCD screen. It is a very hit and miss operation and much of the captured footage is left to luck whether you get what you want.
