This camera blew me away. Let me tell you the positive points.
It is really small. Palm sized so really does slip into a pocket or rucksack. Even in the waterproof case, it has a tiny footprint. It is not as light as it is small if that makes sense but it is not too heavy to sit on a head mount with little detectable weight.
I was a bit dubious about a camera with a really old fashioned 7-rod LCD display. The display looks like a 1980s digital watch. I am not sure why Sony could not come up with a smarter camera interface but, that said, it is perfectly functional but….. the real beauty is that the camera can be set up and controlled using the iOS app. This allows alteration of settings from angle of the shot to white balance. The resolution and frames per second can easily be seen as well as a real time viewer. This more than makes up for the old fashioned display. The camera can be customised using the app and then the filming can be controlled using the camera buttons. All the buttons can be accessed with the waterproof casing on. The start stop button, obviously the most important, is huge and well placed to be able to use on the move. It also has a lock switch to stop if being activated by accident.
The quality of filming is unbelievable. The colours are rich and well defined. The image stabilising makes it very crisp and smooth even on the move. I have taken this running attached to a head mount, snorkling, cycling and in the car attached to the dash as well as on the move hand-held and they are all fantastic quality and really professional looking. Even in low light, the picture quality is amazing.Read more ›
So, when this arrived, what did I think?
Well, the picture quality is amazing. I mean, seriously, it's amazing. The whole camera is the size of a cigarette packet, it weighs next to nothing, but it has a Zeiss lens and produces stunning images. There is quite a pronounced fisheye effect, but that might be par for the course with these things.
It's waterproof. Well, the case it comes with is waterproof. That's great fun.
There is no onboard screen but, and I loved this, you can use your iPhone or Android smartphone as screen and remote control. That's really clever. Really really clever. Loved that. (it's just a free app to download) And if you want to, you can hook up four or five of these and control them all via your phone.
Picture quality is brilliant
It's very small and weighs nothing.
Battery life's not great, but it's tiny, what do you expect?
Battery charging is poor. The camera comes without any kind of adapter, just a USB lead. The advertised charge time is 6hours plugged into a computer, 3 hours plugged into the (not included) power lead. That is poor (and hence the star off). If you're off on holiday, you really need to get a spare battery or two and the charging lead
The menus are all a bit fiddly. There's no OFF button. The screen on the side looks a bit, well, rubbish.
It comes without a memory card - so be warned - you might as well order one at the same time.
It comes with a couple of mounts, but not the mount you need to fix it to a bike (I am a cyclist, so that's the one I'd want).
SO, overall, this is a very very nice product indeed. But not a perfect one.
