There is excellent picture detail, rich colours, and great contrast, 10 years ago, quality like this would have required an outlay of £150 or more. This replaces an old Pioneer, and the quality upgrade is astonishing. I have a Panasonic HD upscaling DVD player, and I really don't see enough difference for me to mark this Sony player down for picture quality. This player isn't even directly linked to my TV, but playing through a scart splitter!
The sound quality is just fine, but then only as good as the Sony Bravia it's playing through. There is phono output and digital coaxial, but what do these mean?
One omission, and that is the remote doesn't have a convenient picture aspect button, so it doesn't replace the TV remote control completely, but does volume, AV channel, and TV on/off. The remote is very dinky with small buttons, complements the player nicely.
It's about the size of a thick A4 notepad, this is an incredibly small machine, almost portable, just perfect. It has just four external control buttons, Power, Eject, Play, and Stop.
The lack of output connections makes this the best machine for people who are not technically minded. I like extras like sharpness enhancement, and Dynamic/Cinema/Standard picture, all of which are not gimmicky but really work.
Like most reviewers, there is nothing to dislike, since it does its job so well for so little money. Why spend so much upgrading to HD when standard def DVD delivers this much punch.
UPDATE TIME - 10 months on and the DVD player has stopped working so changing to 1 star - looks like you get what you pay for!
It also auto-selects the input on the Sony TV when you switch it on, and reverts back to TV when you switch it off. The last DVD player that I bought 3 years ago was about the same price but unbranded and without half of the settings. I highly recommend this DVD player if you're looking for a no-frills, quality make. No HD here, but what to you expect for under £30?
It also has a a very good quality feel to it which for the price I think is ecellent.
The remote has lots of buttons unlike others I have tried & responds well too (I have had one Philips DVD player before where the remote only worked if you were right in front of the player).
I cannot fault it for the price.
