The Sony DVP-NS305 is Sonys new entry level DVD player in its 2002 range. The NS305 sets new standards in operational reliability, video/audio playback quality and ease of use. One striking feature is a new slimline profile, which at a height of just 62 mm saves mounting space and makes the players easy to combine with other home entertainment products. This stylish silver design harmonises with other Sony components, which together can combine to create the most sophisticated and versatile home entertainment systems available.
The DVP-NS305 includes advanced technical features, providing the utmost in high picture quality, such as Sonys Precision Drive2 System. The system includes a new High Speed Stepping motor and a Dynamic Tilt Compensation mechanism which provides faster and more accurate tracking of playback of DVDs as well as Twin Laser Pick Up which enhances playback of CD-R/RW. Compatible with various kinds of DVD-Video discs, Precision Drive2 compensates for disc warp and other disc imperfections and thus ensures reliable disc playback. It also features impressive multi-format playback capabilities, including DVD+RW, DVD-R/RW (Video Mode), DVD-Video, CD, CD-R/RW, Video CD and data CD with MP3.
To further provide reliable and impressive picture quality, the NS305 integrates Block Noise Reduction technology, a new circuit that filters the borders of the component blocks, significantly reducing on-screen block noise artefacts. A new feature is Picture Mode, which allows the user to select one of five picture modes (including standard, 2x dynamic and 2x cinema) to suit their taste. With respect to exciting sound quality, a new 192 kHz 24-bit Digital Audio Converter (DAC) provides outstanding audio to match the players leading image reproduction capabilities. TV Virtual Surround Sound--digital sound created from discrete multi-channel source--optimises the surround sound quality of your TV sets existing speakers to provide an enhanced surround sound effect without multi-channel speakers. Dynamic, Wide, Night and Standard sound settings are available.
An extensive range of features have been included, which are designed to simplify operation including an intuitive Playback Dial, Control Bar and Child Lock. Other user oriented features include a Quick Set Up procedure, guided on screen and Instant Replay, which allows the user to see the last 10 seconds again by pushing one button.

When I opened the box, I was amazed how small it was - it really did look great, the design is great and will easily compliment almost any TV. We already had a DVD player in the living room, so this one went in my bedroom. Connecting it to my portable TV was very easy, and it basically set itself up.
For the price (even if I had of bought it!), I was impressed by its features, some of which you don't get on really expensive cinema kits, such as MP3 CD playback. Even on my little portable TV, you could see the quality that this player was producing, most impressive. For basic operations, it is really easy to use, and even for more advanced operations, the remote is well laid out and easy to use.
If I had to pick one bad thing about this player, it’s the colour of the remote control. I still don't understand why they chose black. But with such good quality, its something I can forgive Sony for.
The picture quality is superb - even with the most darkest of pictures there's no faulting this player. There are a number of included picture modes on the player that makes a difference to what you're watching. There's also the BNR function but it makes little difference I've found to the overall picture quality.
The sound from this player is also superb - from stereo soundtracks to Dolby Digital to DTS, again the quality is superior to other players of this range. Sounds that were previously soft or unheard suddenly break through.
Setting the player up takes a matter of minutes and the onscreen display is simple and informative. It plays CDR so my home made discs play without a problem and it also benefits from the ability to play MP3 files (previously neglected by Sony)
CD-Text and DVD-Text are also avaliable (will display the name of an audio album in the display if cd-text is recorded)
And this player is so super slim!!!
I cannot praise it enough and I hope that my views will persuade others to try this excellent Sony player
The DVP-NS305 fits perfectly in my living room as a standby to my DVD Hi-fi (Sharp CD-DVD500 [Brillaint Hi-fi]) and looks good against my Sony SLV-SE700 Video Recorder (which I also reccomend). Overall it may look cheap for Sony but its still Sony, its still good and its got lots of brillaint features.
...I eagerly opened the box and was quitely suprised at what i found. It looked slim and stylish and I began to set it up straight away. I would run the Sony DVP-NS305 on a standard 21" Phillips TV and connected using a bog-standard scart lead which i bought seperately.
The set up process is quick and easy to use and the general layout of the remote was brilliant. The sound quality is also excellent with the option to choose from many of Sony's TV Virtual Surround Sound options. The only problem that i have that i seem to be having some picture problems. The picture isn't as sharp as i expected and this may be due to my connection setup (Any please recommend a decent scart lead or set up)
Overall This is a good value buy for any DVD lover...
