Positives: Huge zoom for such a small camera. Very fast start up - you can take a picture or video very quickly after switching on. High quality video. Love the screen flip up so can see yourself if talking into the camera for video or if taking a selfie. Clear screen even in sunlight - cannot see the point of including the viewfinder as additional option as screen perfectly visible. Great quality video and pictures. Like the colour choice.
Manageable negatives: There are thinner cameras but of lesser quality. Fits in jeans/trouser pocket easily enough but it is the thicker side of thin, if you get my drift. Pictures are recorded under a different number format than video so after downloading they do not follow in the time sequence taken, but that may be due to a technical reason I am not aware of and not due to the camera specifically.
Overall - best camera I have owned and ticks all the boxes for where we currently are in 2015 of technical development.

I'm an enthusiastic amateur, with a large collection lenses and other such paraphernalia. However, it is nice to just have something you can carry in a pocket without looking like a Sherpa traversing the north face of the Eiger.
My current compact camera has a lower resolution than I would like, so when the opportunity came to try this I jumped at it.
Firstly - it takes very nice photographs. The colours are good, with the primary colours having quite an impact. If anybody out there has ever used Velvia film, that's the kind of colour reproduction I have seen in sunny conditions. In bright conditions it does tend to be slightly darker than it should in some shadows, but I'm just being picky. And at 18 megapixels, I suspect the pictures could be printed at A3 size quite well. Certainly zooming in on a computer screen show a wealth of fine detail.
For a compact it is a little weighty, but there is an awful lot in this little package. Some of it necessary, some of it frivolous. Will anybody really read the Shooting Tip List? It isn't anything you can't find in a basic photography magazine or on the Web.
Having said that - that is an indicator of the market this camera is aimed at - the 'happy snapper' who just wants something to take good quality images without too much work. And it can do that in spades.
It is possible to customise it to the nth degree, but left to most of the defaults it will perform as most people want it.
A very good zoom lens, Good picture quality, good movie quality (the sound is OK, but it is a compact camera after all), easy to use.
The NFC functionality can transfer pictures to an Android phone, with the correct software installed.

I wanted a pocketable compact camera with a long zoom lens, and after much deliberation, and searching of the internet, ordered a Sony Cybershot WX500. My new camera arrived about four days ago, and having tried it out in a variety of conditions, I am very pleased with its performance. I am well aware of the limitations of small cameras with tiny sensors, so did not have unrealistic expectations. Sure enough, it struggles to give good results with the zoom lens extended, if conditions are less than bright. However, when there is plenty of light it responds very well indeed. With the lens un-zoomed the camera copes as well as any other comparable compact in all conditions, and better than most.

It is easy and convenient to use. The auto focus performance is impressively quick and accurate. The image stabilisation works well. I had to do a bit of head scratching to figure out how to use fully manual settings, but it was worth the effort. Last night I took some amazing photos of the moon, showing lots of clear detail of craters and other features on the surface.

The camera seems to be well made, and the battery life is very good.

Overall I am very well pleased with my purchase of the Sony Cybershot WX500. I am sure it will prove to be a very useful piece of equipment when I am out and about, and do not want to carry a larger camera.

I got this camera for christmas after having a Panasonic DMC-TZ1 for 10+ years. This Sony camera is not worth its money, especially the selfies are all really wonky towards the edges. With other pictures, they all seem to appear on the display 3 shades lighter than they come out on the PC. The camera hints on the screen that it wants me to add/open up the flash and then takes the picture without it anyway. I have to try the picture in all different scene modi and then figure out which one is the best, it is definitely not point and shoot. It also doesn't seem to cope with movement. When somebody moves, it comes out as a blur. Seriously thinking to return it and go back to my Panasonic DMC-TZ1.

I purchased this item as an upgrade from my cybershot wx5 (12MP) which I had taken 10,000+ photos. I wasn't impressed with this new camera.

As an experiment I took the same photos using both cameras in my garden. I found the sunlit areas on both cameras still saturated and with no detail whatsoever. Also the increase in level of fine detail between both cameras was very marginal. Certainly not enough to justify paying this amount of money.

I find the sensor in this camera is woeful. They've attached a huge 30x zoom, but haven't improved the sensor sufficiently. In fact the sensor on this camera is the same size as the WX5. In practice I found that pictures which contain shaded areas contained some detail on my previous camera, but come out very dark on this camera when fully zoomed out.
