Whatever you've got planned, if you've packed the TX5 you've got the shot. Waterproof, dust-proof, shock-proof and freeze-proof, this new Cyber-shot has been designed to keep pace with all the action. Available in five sleek colours, the TX5 looks equally at home whether you're hitting the hills on your bike, or heading out for dinner. While smart features like Intelligent Sweep Panorama make taking great pictures simple and fun, beneath the TX5's protective cover lies some serious imaging technology. The 10.2 megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor helps you capture detail-packed pictures in low light, while the Carl Zeiss lens with 4x optical zoom and 25mm wide angle put intimate portraits and dramatic travel scenes all in the frame. And switching to HD movie shooting mode is easy, thanks to the enhanced touchscreen interface. With this clever little camera in your bag or pocket it's never been easier to grab that once in a lifetime moment.

The first waterproof Cyber-shot
This is a camera that's been built to match your active life. It may look small and superslim, with a depth of 17.7mm, but it'll take just about anything you can throw at it. Waterproof down to 3 metres, the TX5 lets you jump in and start snapping the fun. Changing settings is simple on the touchscreen, which will respond even if you're underwater or wearing gloves. Planning a skiing trip? The TX5 can deal with freezing conditions down to -10°C and even keeps shooting after being dropped from a height of 1.5 metres.
Intelligent Sweep Panorama shots
has enhanced the already impressive Sweep Panorama technology so that now you can even capture moving subjects in these extra-wide panoramic images. Just press the shutter, sweep the camera horizontally or vertically and the TX5 will capture up to 100 images in a quick burst, then seamlessly stitch them together to create the ultimate high-resolution panoramic shot.

Brilliant photos even in low light
No need now to be held back by low-light conditions, the TX5 captures the moment in sharp detail thanks to its super-sensitive 10.2 megapixel Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor. Developed exclusively by Sony, it works by reducing noise on the sensor itself, giving you crisp, clean images in dusk or darkly-lit interiors, and even underwater. The TX5 also includes two low-light shooting modes, Handheld Twilight and Anti Motion Blur, which automatically take six frames at high speed and combine them into one optimised shot.
Press the shutter and the Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, working with the BIONZ image processor, enables you to shoot at an incredible 10 high-resolution frames per second at full 10 megapixel resolution.
The big screen
Spin the TX5 round and you've got a 3" Wide Clear Photo LCD touchscreen, with 230k dot resolution for excellent detail and contrast. An intuitive interface means a range of modes and settings are just a touch away. Tap the screen, reinforced with a layer of hardened glass, and scroll through your shots in vivid colour by just sliding your finger across the screen.
Press the shutter and the Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, working with the BIONZ image processor, enables you to shoot at an incredible 10 frames per second at full 10 megapixel resolution. By using a mechanical shutter, distortion is reduced and every move is caught in crisp detail.
Focusing on quality images
Great images start with a great lens. The TX5 is fitted with an optical lens made by renowned specialists Carl Zeiss, which means you'll get excellent image quality even at high magnifications. With the 4x optical zoom far away scenes can be brought into sharp focus, and 25mm wide angle capability gives you freedom to pack more into each scene. Plus with Optical SteadyShot stabilising the image, you won't need to worry about hand movement blurring your pictures.
Your home movies in beautiful HD
The TX5 isn't just about taking great still pictures. Press the movie button on the touchscreen and you're instantly ready to shoot in 720p HD. Great quality sound is taken care of, thanks to the stereo microphone.
Choosing the right settings
The TX5 is equipped with a number of smart features to take the guesswork out of matching your camera settings to your chosen subject. Select Intelligent Auto mode and the camera will automatically recognise eight commonly encountered scenes and adjust settings to ensure well-exposed results wherever and whenever you shoot.
Seen a great shot but high contrasts are causing washed-out backgrounds and detail lost in shadow? Just switch to Backlight Correction HDR and the TX5 will take two images at different exposure settings, then combine the best elements of each into one natural-looking image.

I expected the tx5 to be a camera for special trips rather than everyday use, but I use it more than any of my other cameras (I have 5 other cameras which I currently use, including a canon SLR). The Hand Held Twilight mode is brilliant. I've taken lots of very atmospheric shots in dark castles and it seems to cope with anything. No need to use flash, where flash is forbidden. HHT mode also came into its own at the Nubian Museum earlier this year, where I was able to take pictures of the mummies again without flash. I then tried a sweep panorama while walking down one side of one of the mummies and got amazing results. The rest of our sight-seeing party, for all their flashy SLRs were astonished at the photo quality this little unimposing compact was able to deliver.
I've not had chance to test it underwater yet, but based on its performance so far, I'm confident it will deliver fantastic results.
I bought this camera when it first came out for a holiday to Mauritius where I was going to go snorkelling. I had previously used a little Olympus in an underwater housing on a trip to The Maldives but had problems seeing the LCD underwater when the sun was on it, so had to point it in the general direction and hope for the best.
For snorkelling it has proved to be a winner. I could easily see the LCD through my goggles and change the settings. The downside is that although there is an underwater mode, I am not sure if this is the best setting as it appears to set a low ISO (even when it is on Auto), when a higher ISO and therefore slightly higher shutter speed would be desirable to freeze the fish! I had a lot of blurred shots, but this could also be down to my panning techniques as the litte suckers move fast sometimes! Overall, I certainly had more winners than I ever got with my Olympus even though there was more of a current to fight! I guess having a higher ISO would also have meant more grainy/noisy pictures at the expense of detail, so it is difficult to say which would have been better.
I shot some underwater movies with it and was pleasantly surprised how good they were. They are quite easy to upload and edit in iMovie.
On dry land it is a different matter, the camera's white balance appears far too warm and saturated for my taste and I have had to correct for this in Lightroom, although I have to be honest that I am not entirely sure if it was the setting I had it on, as it doesn't appear that this is the case with every shot because some colours are great straight out of the camera. Out of choice, on dry land I usually shoot with a DSLR, so this camera will only usually come out when it is raining or when I need a quick point and shoot, so I need more time to do more testing to make sure it wasn't me. I also need more time to do some more testing with the panorama and other features and will come back and make a comment on this.
Overall, if you just want a camera for dry land, I would look elsewhere as the features on this will be overkill and I am sure there are better options, but if you intend to use it for snorkelling or in the wet etc, then I think you will be very pleased.
They are LCD dead-pixels because the picture viewed on the computer is fine.
I am sending it back, and Amazon has already arranged for a new one to be sent.
Thank you Amazon, Shame on Sony.
I would expect better from Sony...
Replacement arrived and faulty one sent back yesterday and all is good until now.
HD Movie quality is great and you can even zoom in and out while recording a movie.
