Product Description

The Cyber-shot W50 - Slim aluminium body with great features: 6.0 effective Megapixels, High ISO Sensitivity for sharper shots, Carl Zeiss 3x Optical zoom lens, extra large and bright 2.5-inch LCD screen, and STAMINA battery life....

Manufacturer's Description

Style, Simplicity, and Performance The DSC-W50 combines sleek metal body and compact design with new high-tech features for image quality and operating convenience. Super-sharp 6.0-megapixel resolution delivers more detail when you're cropping or making big prints. Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens and High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 1000) combine to produce sharp images even in low-light conditions. And Sony's original Clear RAW NR processing circuitry minimises the colour noise distortion of high-sensitivity shooting.

A Screen that Shows More - The extra-large 2.5-inch LCD screen of the DSC-W50 not only gives you a big, bright image for setting up shots and checking results, it also displays a convenient camera Function Guide, with text and icons for easy-to-operate features like colour and brightness adjustments, image size, flash and self-timer modes, focusing modes and more. The DSC-W-50 even provides an eye-level viewfinder for traditional shooting.

Everything You Need for Great Results - Despite its compact size, the DSC-W50 incorporates shooting features every digital photographer wants--32 MB2 Internal Memory for capturing images in-camera without a flash memory card, built-in slot for optional Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO Duo media, and Stamina Lithium Ion battery with enough power to capture up to 390 shots3.

6.0-Megapixel Super HAD CCD - Higher megapixels gives you more detail and definition for making large prints and cropping in on your subject. Sony's advanced Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.

Extra-Large 2.5-Inch LCD Screen - The DSC-W50 has a bigger, brighter 2.5-inch LCD screen for setting up and viewing images--with a one-touch "Play" button that makes it quick and easy to view your photos.

Simple Controls, Function Guide - User-friendly controls and simple on-screen Function Guide text/icon display help you set up camera functions for terrific shots--and you'll have greater creative freedom to adjust colour mode (including "Natural" for subtle colours and "Rich" for more intense colours), sensitivity, brightness, and image size.

High Sensitivity Mode - A new High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 1000) allows you to shoot with great results in low-light conditions--and Sony's original Clear RAW NR (Noise Reduction) image processing technology helps suppress the colour noise that can accompany high-senstivity shooting.

Carl Zeiss 3x Optical/2x Digital Zoom - 3x optical zoom helps the DSC-W50 bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots for better composition; Sony's precision 2x digital zoom provides an additional 2x magnification to enlarge details without jagged edges.

Stamina Battery Power - With its powerful Lithium Ion rechargeable battery, the DSC-W50 can capture up to 390 images--enough for a whole vacation. The compact BC-CSG battery charger is also supplied for battery recharging on the go.

13x Smart Zoom Feature At VGA resolution, Sony's Smart Zoom feature intelligently "crops into" the central portion of interest in your photo without sacrificing full CCD resolution--avoiding the image degradation of other digital zooms.

Capture Images In-Camera - With 32 MB of internal memory, the DSC-W50 allows you to shoot without a flash memory card--then transfer your images to optional Memory StickDuo media, upload to your computer, or make prints on your digital printer.

Memory Stick Duo Media - The DSC-W50 has a built-in slot for optional Memory StickDuo or higher-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo media--the ultra-compact media for shooting, storing, and sharing your photo images.

MPEG Movie VX Fine Mode - The DSC-W50 can capture VGA (640 x 480) audio-video clips at high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second), with length limited only by the capacity of your media.

I was looking for a second camera (already have a high spec semi professional digital camera) to replace my old Canon S10 to carry around when on family outings, parties etc. It needed to be small and compact but of cause produce good quality pictures under varied conditions many of which would be taken indoors. Battery life was important too. I had been looking at the Canon Ixus 55. However although very new and with only a few reviews I decided to go for the Sony DSC-W50 which has a much better battery life than the 55, higher ISO (1000), 6 Mega instead of 5 and picture stability etc. On receiving the camera I was very impressed straight away with the overall speed of the camera - start up, focus, shoot and flash charge up. I have so far taken about 200 pictures about 100 with flash and am overall very pleased so far with this camera and would recommend to anyone looking for a handy compact to carry around.
Good: - 1000 ISO, very good battery life, fast start-up and flash charge, fairly accurate and fast focus, high proportion of well exposed pictures in auto program taken both with and without flash, very easy to use.
Bad points: - Battery cover a little flimsy and loose, manually altered setting in program mode not reset after switch off so that when the camera is used again the manually setting are retained i.e. flash off (you need to remember what you altered last time).

After Sony required twice the original purchase price of my wife's last Sony 'point and shoot' digital camera to repair the LCD screen, I decided that we may as well just buy another camera!

I was weary of going back to Sony, but after the positive experience with her previous camera in terms of image quality (especially indoors) and after looking at the alternatives I decided to stick with Sony. I was particularly impressed that the LCD has an integrated plastic protecting cover, unlike many of the alternatives which leave the vulnerable glass front of very large LCD screens completely exposed. Something of a concern to us now that we know the price of a replacement LCD screen!

I have a Nikon D50 DSLR, and although that is obviouly in a different league, I am still very impressed with the quality of the results from a camera costing a fraction of that of the D50, and would consider it to be a worthy companion to the D50. The D50 can be a bit of a bore to lug around at times and hence often gets left at home save for special occasions, whereas the W50 goes everywhere with us!

My wife finds the Sony very easy to use and it produces clear, in focus photographs with very few exceptions. Battery life is good, especially compared to her previous AA-powered Sony camera (although standard batteries are often a distinct advantage when somewhere remote!) The majority of 'work' the camera does is indoors, for online auctions listings and photos of our two young children. For that you can't fault the DSC-W50, although as you would expect from any small camera because of the small lens photographs outside do generally produce better results.

Build quality is excellent.

I am not going to bore prospective buyers of this Camera with a lot of technospeak, but i will just say that if you are looking for a camera that delivers fantastic pictures and is easy to use,and has lots of extra features then this is the camera for you.The only gripe i can think of is that the Battery cover is very loose fitting.Other than this buy it,use it,love it.

Recently took this camera on holiday with me, over the course of 9 days I took over 200 photos and some short movies. After this the battery is still 3/4 full!! incredible!

The photo quality is excellent in all situations. The camera has a number of different modes depending on your location. The programmable mode allowing you to shoot in B&W etc is also great!

All in all the W50 is a fantastic camera, it looks great, it is very compact and well built, it is easy to use, has one huge lcd screen on the back, and takes fantastic quality photos! Recommended

This camera is very simple to use and has great results. I love the fact that it is small enough to place in my pocket without any difficulty. I do recommend that u also buy a new memory stick as u only get a built in 32mb which only holds 10 high quality photos. I ordered the Sony 512Mb Memory Stick Duo NEW Pro for £16.62 off Amazon, now i can take 161 high quality photos.

Having dropped my old Sony, I looked around the market and decided to stick with them. The W50 is eveything I had read about - brilliant pictures, plenty of flexibility, very compact, great LCD screen and not just value for money, but (amazingly for Sony) a very, very competitive price point too.

And the service? An Amazon customer for 5 years, I've never before been compelled to write a review. It's the excellent service that made the difference - ordered on Sunday afternoon and delivered on Monday! I'm sure the stock Amazon have just got in will continue to fly out the door - buy it now.

Purchased the w50 about 5 weeks ago - this is my 2nd Sony camera my last one was a P9 which was good but slow on start up - the w50 is more compact, fast response when turning on, takes excellent pictures and has a massive viewing screen. What more can you asked for it is the dogs doodahs.
