Looking for a digital camera with big features at a reasonable price? The Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-P73 is just the camera for you.
The DSC-P73 features all of the extras you would expect from a camera twice its price, such as 5 area multi-point auto focus, slow shutter noise reduction, manual exposure control and multi-pattern measuring. It even features PictBridge™ compatibility, so you can print directly from the camera without the need of a computer.
Images are outstanding thanks to the combination of a 4.1 Megapixel Super HAD™ CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, and Sony’s Real Imaging Processor. Incredibly, all of these features come in a camera that is compact and easy to use.
1/2.7" 4.1 Megapixel Super HAD™ CCD
Super HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCDs provide excellent image quality by allowing more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.
3X Optical / 2X Digital / 6X Total Zoom
3X Optical Zoom helps you frame your shots for better digital pictures. And Sony’s Precision Digital Zoom provides an additional 2X magnification without the jagged edges of other designs, resulting in smoother images.
1.5" LCD Monitor
The 1.5" 67K LCD Monitor makes framing shots and reviewing pictures easy. • Live Histogram Display
Available in capture and playback, the Live Histogram Displays the concentration of pixels at each luminosity value making it easy to evaluate the correct exposure.
Selectable Focus Mode
Monitoring AF (Auto Focus) helps you anticipate the action by focusing even before you press the shutter release.
Scene Selection Mode
With 6 Scene Modes, parameters can be matched to the shooting conditions. Choose from one of the following: Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Soft Snap, Candle, or Beach.
With a momentary pre-flash, the camera illuminates the subject and sets exposure through the lens for accurate flash metering. Adjustable flash level and red-eye reduction ensure great flash shots.
4 Shot Burst Mode
Capture up to 4 shots (fine) or 7 shots (standard) at 1.7 frames/sec. even at 4 MP resolution. Perfect for high speed subjects or fast moving action such as sports.
Captures 16 320 x 240 frames as part of a single 1280 x 960 image which plays back sequentially in the camera. Selectable 1/7.5, 1/15, 1/30 second. Conversion Lens Compatible
With the optional VAD-PEB adaptor, you can add tele- or wide- conversion lenses for greater magnification or wider field of view, as well as protective and special effect filters.
Display images or MPEG movies with audio on a TV (with A/V input) for everyone to enjoy.
Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries

Top customer reviews
On the outside the camera is well built, with a sturdy plastic shell, the Sony lens projects out of the front about 3/4 of an inch and once closed the lens is automatically covered for protection, it's also small enough to fit in your pocket. The rear LCD screen is very good, but as with all LCDs it can be hard to see in bright sunlight, fortunately the camera is equipped with an optical viewfinder. It is powered by two AA batteries, with excellent battery life, it is indeed capable of the 400 shots from a single charge of the batteries. The only flaw is the memory stick it is supplied with as it only holds 8/9 full resolution photos, an adequate sized memory card (250mb) is about £50. Bundled with the camera is Sony's rechargable batteries and a charger, a wrist strap and a cable to connect it to your TV which is a nice added extra. You'll probably want to buy the accessory set with a spare set of batteries and a soft case which is about £15 from Amazon, although at the time of writing you could get the set free with the camera.
At under £200 the Cybershot P73s is a bargain, ideal for beginners and advanced users alike, even with the added cost of an additional memory card and accessory pack, it is excellent value for money and will last you years with care.
Even the exterior design is a work of art, the LCD screen is small but the high quality of it (doesn't blur when camera is moved) more than makes up for this. Coming with batteries and a charger is one less hassle, but you must buy a case with it (you wouldn't want that beautiful silver finish being scratched now!) You must also buy a 256Mb MemoryStick Pro, this will allow you to fully utilise all the features (e.g. high resolution, movie with sound capture etc)
Another surprise for me (this is my first digital camera) was the zoom lens: unlike my film camera whereby the lens protrudes further and further out from the casing as you zoom in, the Sony's lens actually moves in slightly! I'm confused myself but it works!
One slight gripe: when taking night time shots the flash flashes repeatedly before taking the shot. This often results in people moving, blinking etc. before the photo is taken. Of course, this is common with most new cameras now, I usually solve it by either turning the flash off if poss or just taking another photo to be sure.
All in all though, an excellent buy, I would urge you to consider this - great value on Amazon.
It's also easy to use the menu functions to change the amount of size your photos will be otherwise u cant get as many pictures as you'd like on a memory card.
I would advise getting a protective case though otherwise the screen on the back can get scratched which would suck!
