First impressions were very good. Sony can't be faulted on quality and the unit was heavy, polished and really looks the business sitting under your TV. There's not many manufacturers that can provide the same level of quality. Set-up was super easy. I plugged all my HDMI sources into the unit and then connected the HDMI output to my TV. Everything worked first time and the auto-switching worked very well. The TV even recognised the soundbase and routed the volume control through it.
OK, so on to sound quality which is the primary reason most people are going to buy this. Well, there's two ways of looking at it. At lower volumes the improvement is subtle, vocals in particular are enhanced making it easier to distinguish voices. But it's at higher volumes the improvement is more apparent, with the subwoofer really making a difference over standard TV. If you're looking for a massive 5.1 style improvement in sound then go elsewhere, but for a decent all-round improvement without the clutter of extra cables then go ahead. Just don't expect miracles.
Since buying the HT-XT1 Sound Base and using the Wolf Hall/rugby international test, things have improved a lot, and I consider it to have been a really worthwhile purchase. As somebody in their 60's my hearing will only get worse, so hopefully the HT-XT1 will mean that I can continue to hear things clearly without resorting to turning the volume up.
I connected the TV and sound base using the optical audio input cable and an HDMI cable. Providing you remember to power up the sound base before the TV – so that the TV knows that the sound base exists, you can then control volume levels and power on/off just from the TV controller.
The sound base is an attractive piece of equipment and looks like it was made with the KDL32W7 in mind.
Lastly, I really like the SongPal app for Android which allows you to use a Bluetooth connection to the sound base to provide vastly improved sound for apps like BBC iPlayer Radio and Play Music on your phone.
The unit takes the TV with no problem at all, looks great, the glass finish on top is really classy, compliments the TV well. It is a little bit of a dust magnet though.
Now the sound. It's great, a real room filling sound. Now, I love good quality in both picture and sound but I'm not one who's ever gone for the full surround sound in your house, I go to the cinema for that kind of experience. This is as far as I'd go for more things in my front room, and it's unobtrusive and gives such a nice sound I can't see why you'd want more.
If you're wondering why you'd need it over the TV sound, I have one main point that may help. With a sound bar/base the quality of sound is so much better than that of flat TVs tiny speakers and they're directed in the right direction. This means that the audio is cleaner and clearer so you don't have to turn the volume up that high to make out all the dialogue in movies. For me this means a great deal as sometimes in the past after a film I found my ears ringing from how loud I've had to have the audio to make out what on earth is going on.
The Base also has bluetooth which is great, I love my tech and I love that I can have a good quality speaker in my lounge without having extra things cluttering the place.
All the connections run through the unit so you change HDMI inputs with the remote for the base. You can sync a Sony TV to control the volume, and it will go to standby when you turn the TV off. It does mean you have to keep the remote nearby.
All in all it's great, glad I went for Sony as it's "talks" to my TV really well so it's a nice experience to use.Read more ›
To be honest I'd always thought the sound from our excellent flatscreen Sony TV had been pretty good (for a flatscreen anyway) - although since connecting this system I've realised things can be so much better. What a difference this system makes to the watching the TV! The sound is rich and adds such depth. I've heard things in films I'd not noticed previously. The settings that pick out dialogue work well too as sometimes it can be difficult to pick out speech on shows / films.
The system syncs well with the TV and Sky through ARC so the Sky remote controls everything. The system looks the part too with the glass top. Whilst it obviously adds a bit of height to the TV, you quickly get used to it. All in all a very good purchase.
