The S5 is a high-performance, all-in-one wireless music system that delivers crystal-clear, room-filling sound. Simply plug it in wherever you want music and enjoy. The 5-driver speaker system is individually powered by 5 dedicated digital amplifiers and includes 2 tweeters, 2 mid-range drivers and 1 subwoofer for high-quality sound that rivals much larger, more complicated audio equipment. To start playing music, a ZoneBridge must be connected to the router, then all the rest work wirelessly. The S5 is available in both black and white. The Sonos ZoneBridge makes setting up your Sonos system super fast and easy. It’s the ideal solution if your house doesn’t have Ethernet wiring or your router is in a room where you don’t want music. Just connect the ZoneBridge to your broadband router to instantly activate the SonosNet wireless mesh network. Now all ZonePlayers and Controllers will work wirelessly, anywhere in your house. The ZoneBridge can also be used to extend the range of your Sonos system and expand the Controller’s wireless coverage.

I previously had 2 Bose Lifestyle 5 systems in my living room and dining room and and a Bose iPod docking station in the kitchen. I wanted to upgrade the lot and I looked at wireless systems as my wife has a thing about wires showing!! After looking at loads of alternatives I finally took the plunge and decided to replace everything with the Sonos system. I have got S5 Zoneplayers in each of the 3 rooms, a zonebidge wired to the Router on my computer and a wireless zonebridge in a cupboard between 2 of the rooms. It took me less that an hour (and one call to the on-line help service) to set it all up, I am sure that anyone with more experience than me would do it a lot quicker! Since then I have never looked back. At the touch of a button I can play all of my iTunes library on either all or just some of the zoneplayers and after signing up to Napster on their free month trial, I can access millions of albums. I can also connect to any of the zoneplayers my, or anyone elses, iPod/MP3 player and that will play in one or all of them as well. Everything is controlled by the dedicated control unit which is really easy use. The sound quality to me is superb, it seems a lot richer than my old Bose system and the sound seems to fill the whole room. I would recommend this system to anyone.
This is an expensive bit of kit but I felt, had I gone for cheaper option, I would be disappointed that I didn't have Sonos in my life every time I listened to music. I haven't gone for the controller and can't see the point as the iPod/ iPad apps are soo good and easy to use (and free!).
In terms of sound it is pretty good. I have read reviews where people have compared it to B&W Zeppelins - don't believe them for a second! These people obviously haven't done a proper comparison. What it does provide should be more than ample sound for most homes though, so don't be put off.
If your bank balance stretched this far, buy one. Accept no substitute - unless you're really flash in which case buy some B&W audio equipment and zoneplayers instead of an S5.
Incredibly easy to setup and get the S5 and Zonebridge's talking. One of the devices does need to be physically wired into your broadband router, just so you know. The rest of the connectivity is sorted out by the Sonos using an 802.11n wireless mesh network.
Whats handy about the S5 and the zonebridge is that each of these units has a two port integrated switch, this has had the added bonus of enabling me to get wired internet access in my kitchen and Living room, without having to use a Comtrend or similar solution that sends the signals through your electrical wiring.
I have a unit setup in the Kitchen, and one in the Living Room, I have a £5.00 a month napster deal for streaming music, and I have a NAS drive providing me access to my large collection of music.
Sound quality is very good, it fills the rooms they are used in very effectively, and provides enough bass to give a good depth to the music. The S5 units look very sleek and don't look out of place where I have them positioned.
The ability to control your music from a handheld device is also really useful, I use an Ipad to do that running the Sonos controller software that is a free download from the apple store.
It's a great system, sound is excellent, ease of use is first class, the software to control the units is simple and intuitive.
It is an expensive piece of kit, but sometimes you need to pay for quality, and with this system that is what you get.
