Well, I've only had it a few days, and first impressions are - WOW!! It sounds amazing!! You'd have to be some tech geek audiophile to say otherwise. A really full, well balanced sound - treble is nice and crisp, and there's plenty of bass. I adjusted the EQ via the Sonos app, as I like my music to have high treble... it sounds seriously good. I've linked my Amazon Music account to it and it works seamlessly- no problems at all. If Spotify is your thing, Sonos have now released a software update which can make that your default music player which works with voice commands, if you prefer. Now the Alexa issue - which I'll be honest, was the thing that first put me off buying this.... So far I've had no problems. I've only had the speaker a few days, and only had to repeat myself a couple of times. It hears me fine whilst playing music. So far - every time (although it is in a fairly small room to be fair.) All commands I have given Alexa, she has heard and given an answer. She gave me a Sky Sports flash briefing, as I have downloaded the skill on the Alexa app, but at present I don't think you can get other news flash briefings. This will change, I expect, along with other enhancements as further Sonos updates are released over the coming months... So just to confirm - Alexa has worked fine for me - no problems. I've never owned any other smart speaker, so can't compare if Alexa is better or worse on this, but from my own experience, no problems at all! Set up was fine - just install the Sonos app, Alexa app and music account app (e.g. Amazon or Spotify), create accounts for each and then just follow the really easy step by step instructions. It took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. So to conclude, I can't understand a lot of the negative reviews for the Sonos One - it makes me wonder if some of them have been written by publicity staff of rival products. For me, this has been a fantastic purchase - it really is an amazing speaker, and I'm just so pleased I've got one. The aim is to get another two, when funds permit. It's still in its early months of release, and so with further updates, is only going to get better and better. Just buy one - you really won't regret it.....
Alexa support is spotty. For instance for the life of me I can't get it to resume what I've preciously played. If I say, 'Alexa play' or other variants I get inconsistent response, mostly negative. On reflection I think Alexa is poor in general, and am waiting for Google support and switching over to that.
My other issue is how poor Spotify is with this. Using Spotify connect through the Spotify app is often a frustrating experience with songs stopping or just not playing. If I play songs through the Sonos app it's fine. What I can't work out is whose fault this is, Sonos or Spotify.
Sonos are soon implementing Airplay 2 support into these speakers, and that I hope will solve this problem (albeit I'm streaming from my iPhone rather than directly from Spotify) but A2 is an unknown entity as Apple (to date) haven't released this.
I stream music from my NAS and it works flawlessly. You can't play anything from your library through Alexa, by the way.
I have no hesitation in recommending these. I've looked A LOT at other solutions and nothing comes close in terms of quality, tech support, service support (Spotify, GPM, Deezer et all). They aren't cheap, especially if you want (and you really want) to pair them up, but Sonos kit lasts for ages and the company has a track record in supporting their devices with latest updates.
- Fantastic sound quality, especially for its size
- Responds and streams requests instantly
- Beautiful design and solid build quality
- Ability to use as part of a stereo pair or multi-room set-up
- No Bluetooth or aux input meaning you're locked into the Sonos ecosystem
- Alexa can be a little hard of hearing
- Google Assistant still MIA
- Unable to use "Cast" button in any app with the exception of Google Play Music meaning that you must use the Sonos controller for everything else
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, the perfect entry point into multi-room audio with the benefits of assistant integration. I do however wish Sonos would allow us the option to "Cast" from all apps.
These speakers have been my first introduction to Sonos, and Alexa. I must like them as I have just bought a Sonos Beam to make them into a surround sound TV setup.
But I digress - I originally bought these speakers to bring some music to my living room. As we didn’t yet own a TV, and being someone who values audio more than video generally I wanted something nice I could stream music with.
These speakers were a great choice. They pair easily, and using the iOS app can be tuned to the environment for a lovely, room filling sound. The music is nicely balanced, with a reasonable amount of base and volume when needed while at the same time providing a very clear and enjoyable low volume listening experience.
My experience with Alexa has been mixed. She doesn’t always hear my unless I raise my voice, which can be frustrating. Asking for tracks on Spotify can be a gamble, as it will often play a more recent cover over my intended choice or even get the song entirely wrong. Sometimes it will say it’s playing by not play any music at all.
Still, I’ve been able to have a great time using the Spotify app and with Airplay 2 support, streaming music to these awesome speakers is easy. I’m looking forward to trying the Beam and seeing how it works alongside them.
I would rate this 5 stars for the quality of the speakers but Alexa lets it down a bit. Still, I feel these are very much worth it and hope Alexa continues to improve over time.
