Product description

In 2014, something unusual happened. On the strength of their breakthrough album Too Many Roads, Denmark's Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado went global. Now it's one thing for an artist from Copenhagen to enjoy success at home and in a few adjacent countries. But the release of Too Many Roads saw the seven-piece combo fronted by singer and guitarist Risager gaining widespread notoriety in the U.S. and being invited to play in locales as far away as Mumbai, India. The album took home the Danish Music Award as the Top Blues Album of 2014 and also earned Germany's illustrious "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik," but perhaps even more impressively, it was selected as one the year's best by Britain's influential The Blues magazine, right alongside international stars like Robert Cray, Walter Trout and Joe Bonamassa. Clearly, Risager and his mates had taken their exhilarating mix of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll to the next level. Early in 2015, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado celebrated that triumph by returning to one of their favorite nightspots - the Harmonie in Bonn, Germany. They would treat local fans to a one-of-a-kind spectacle, hitting the stage as a ten-piece mini-orchestra. After Thomas Ruf of Ruf Records introduces this deluxe edition of the band - including a three-man horn section and backing vocalists Ida Bang und Lisa Lystam - the colossal sound of Risager's semi-hollow body spearheads the all-out attack of opening number "If You Wanna Leave." He and his Black Tornado are off to the races... The succeeding 100-minute concert, captured on CD and DVD for the newest addition to Ruf's Songs from the Road series, shows off every facet of this unique conglomeration of musicians. There's the sinuous funk of "Paradise" and the furious boogie of "The Straight and Narrow Line" (featuring big-time playing by piano man Emil Balsgaard and saxophonist Hans Nybo). There's the twin-guitar blues of "Too Many Roads" and the rough-and-tumble attitude of "Rock 'n' Roll Ride." There's the chilling "China Gate" and the dark drama of "Long Forgotten Track." Finally, the band whips the crowd into frenzy with their ultra-groovy take on the classic "Baby Please Don't Go" and the timeless party anthem "Let The Good Times Roll," the latter track showcasing the talents of lead guitarist Peter Skjerning. The funk workout "Opener" and the charming "I Won't Let You Down" (performed as a duet with Lisa Lystam) offer some welcome after play. More than anything, Songs from the Road shows that the success of Too Many Roads was no fluke. Thorbjørn Risager and his highly skilled accomplices have perfected a spicy blend of musical ingredients. The hundreds of shows they've played during the past few years have them running like a well-oiled machine. More great things can be expected of them in the future - but until then, we have this brilliant document of a band that is quietly revolutionizing the way we look at the blues.

Superb live renditions, with a lot of the album based on Too Many Roads. I find it very difficult to work out whether I prefer the live versions or the studio versions. There is a certain rawness and "straight up" quality to this live album that makes it very appealing - seeing the DVD is a really "feel good" experience. I ended up buying both albums, and downloading a digital greatest hits (called "Between Rock and Some Hard Blues"). I can sincerely say that they are three great purchases.
Seeing Thorbjørn Risager and the Black Tornado live is a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which has been captured well on this album. Saw them last November, and will be seeing them again on 21st January, a few days after the release of their new album "Change My Game".

Wow ! this came as a very pleasant surprise, All the way from Copenhagen Denmark, but could have merged from the Delta or Chicag. This is a real deal slice of blues by one great band. Live in Bonn recorded in April this year, on the back of the bands well received 'Too Many Roads' CD. The band includes two guitar including it's leader, keys, bass and drums, that's not all because there's a cracking three piece horn section that ad fullness to the whole sound, and two female backing singers. So it's a big band with a big sound. Thorbjorn has that depth of voice that suits the blues like a glove, full and rich. Take a listen to the song just before the closer ''I Won't Let You Down', joined by one of the ladies and just guitar this is a simply awesome performance. The boogie piano on 'The Straight And Narrow Line', will have your feet tapping, one of those to pull up the rug too and dance the night away. The strength of the album is not only the high quality of songs, all but two originals as well, but the different styles all through the set. The cover are great takes on Muddy Waters blues classic, 'Baby Please Don't Go', and the song that will always be linked with the late great B.B.King in 'Let The Good Times Roll', both are very well played, and although both have been recorded more times than I could mention here still sound fresh, mind you have to ask just how many recordings do we need of blues songs like this? Also a standout is the slide guitar playing throughout the set, very nice touch and not full of your usual notes which is noce.
You could say much more but the taste is in the eating, and like a nice meal this is full of wondrful and enjoyable flavours. The DVD is a generous 100 minutes that has five more songs than the CD which itself is full length hour plus. So all in all a great double disc, by a superb and emerging band, its leader oh that great voice, and live just about as good as it gets. You just gotta hear this one, a name and band to watch !

This is a BRILLIANT album. I love those guys, I saw them in concert recently and they will make you happy, thumping and singing and dancing along. So much good humour, good music, and excellent musicianship. And Thorbjorn's voice is amazing. I have some of their studio work but this live album is finally rendering the energy they have live in concert. I love the horn section, they add a layer of swing to it all. If you like rock, blues, this is for you. Must have.

Yet to see them live in the UK but if the DVD is anything to go by, stand well back and enjoy. The deep throaty voice, with the brass backing goes O so well. Beware, first track, make sure all who live near you is out, turn up volume and ENJOY.
