Having a legend as a Mother can cause havoc in your life - something Lorna Luft knows all too well; and as she will admit she spend a good many years running away from her Mother's legacy. Having turned and faced the music, Lorna has grasped hold of this timeless songbook of her Mothers and made it her own... with superb results! 'Songs My Mother Taught Me' is the album of the show celebrating the life of Judy Garland. Lorna delivers an outstanding vocal performance on this album, the arrangements are fantastic and I think you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who can improve on Lorna's version of 'The Man that Got Away'.

If you're looking for an album that tells a story, then this is definitely the album for you! Lorna Luft has, in my opinion, produced an unsurpassed tribute to her mother, the Legend that was, Judy Garland.

In terms of vocals, you can clearly tell that Lorna is her mother's daughter, giving marvellous renditions of some of my personal favourites, but what I also believe to be some Judy's best songs.

One particular track that I doubt has ever been done before nor will ever be bettered, is the `Born in a Trunk Melody'. Lorna tells her mother's story through an outstanding arrangement of her mother's songs from a long line of musicals and shows, and it keeps you listening intently throughout its near 20 minute length.

Finally, my personal favourite on this album has to be `Shining Star'. The producers of this song should win an award for creating such a tear-jerking posthumous mother and daughter duet that makes you wish you could see them singing together.

Lorna says in this album that she wants to keep the torch of her mother's legacy burning and she has done it superbly! I only wish she could have sung more of her mother's songs ... but who knows what the future may hold.

At last the soundtrack of the Westend show of the same name. I went to the show and was blown away. I have been a fan of Judy since I was Knee high (unfortunately she died the year after I was born) and when I saw an advert for the show I just HAD to see it.

The show was fantastic and Lorna was excellent. (I have since seen Lorna in White Christmas which was also really good). What an insight we got as to the 'true' judy. Although all the music was wonderful and the imagery used in the show the most poignant for me was 'Through the Years' which bought tears to my eyes.

At last I can now listen to this over and over and over again. Hurrah!!!

It's the first time I hear Lorna Luft sing....,indeed she had a great voice but the problem -at least in this cd- is than she sang
sometimes like her mother I don't know on purpose or perhaps she sings this way,but in this cd dedicated to her mother very often
her voice and way to sing is very similar to her,and if we added than ALL the songs were very popular songs of Judy Garland,
sometimes you have the doubt than she is imitating her. I don't know if I'm right or not,but I will like hear Lorna Luft singing
another kind of songs (Of course not Judy Garland repertory ) and then I will know if she is really good or just a ghost of Judy
Garland.

Is Lorna Judy's lesser daughter? Certainly not. Lorna's always been a talented singer. That has never been the issue. So, why did Lorna never make it like her legendary sister Liza did? Good question, but this album doesn't answer that question, though. Lorna has made an acceptable tribute to her beloved mother, but does it represent the Garland gene? Most certainly not. This album is for Lorna fans, and for Lorna fans only. That being said, it is far from being a bad album, and it actually does have a certain charm to it. She does justice to "The Man That Got Away", "Rock-a-bye Your Baby (With a Dixie Melody)" and ""Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart", but, that's as far as it stretches. The unfortunate thing about the album is the way it is constructed. It's a lounge/cabaret album at best, and I am not talking about Liza's cabaret. What I have always wondered is why Lorna just didn't inherit that special gift that both Judy and Liza had. That undying passion for entertainment, and for performing. Lorna is arguably a better singer than Liza, but, it is a shame that she just never got what showbiz is all about. Lorna is capable of putting on a good show, but that's about it. For the curious, this album may be hard to sit through - I certainly thought so. This is not an attack on Lorna, but just my experience with the album. So, buy the album and judge for yourself.

Highlights: ""Zing! Went The Strings of My Heart", "The Man That Got Away", "Chicago" and "Rock-a-bye Your Baby (With a Dixie Melody)".
