A great covers album. I'm a fan of his original albums and you've got to see this man live, he's a great songwriter and performer. So I was skeptical when I learned he was doing a covers album but he pulls it off with style. The fact that it's all songs from David Lynch films is an inspired bonus. One can already have safely surmised that Twin Peaks must not be too far from Truax's legendary Wowtown.
"Wicked Game" is a strange choice for an opener. It's familiar, but rawer, a less mainstream take that seduces you in with extra deep vocals and what presumably is one of Mr. Truax's kinetic sculpture motor drum machines in the background. The Twin Peaks theme is much livelier/poppier than you would expect from Thomas. He steers well clear of the Julee Cruise original, with surprising results. Things really get rolling with "Baby Please Don't Go" also from Wild At Heart.
He is inventive in his treatment of many of these songs but as a whole it's not as dark or weird as you might expect (with some exceptions, "In Heaven" being one). But he wisely holds back from weirding out some of the standards, like "Blue Velvet" and "In Dreams", and lets his crooning do the talking. It's a tasteful, slightly retro, consistently good album I will be listening to a lot.Songs From The Films Of David Lynch
