There is some hinting at plot points that you later find out are true, but you are still intrigued. After you find out what is going on, you fall in love with her as a character and are cheering for her through the rest of the book. You feel like you are going through all the same emotions that Sarah is going through and are fighting the same battles.

I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys psychological books with a touch of mystery.

The plot keeps the reader in mild suspense throughout, and nothing is given away by the author until you've actually read the twist. At times heart wrenching and at other times laugh out loud funny. Definitely something for everyone. All in all an excellent read and I look forward to further work by R V Biggs. It will be well worth the wait.

From sad and cyclical to sickly sweet

In ’Song of the Robin’, we come to know Sarah, a woman plagued by confusing visions and worrying dreams. Her life is pretty organised. She’s good at her job, although doesn’t find much inspiration in it. She has a best friend, a hard-working brother, and has had a happy childhood.

When the story begins, Sarah has started losing time. Hours pass while she’s looking through the window. Her working day evaporates in the blink of an eye. She has blackouts, and sometimes finds herself pulling into her driveway or waking up in bed with no idea how she got there.

As the story progresses, we learn that Sarah’s understanding of her life is misguided. Some of the characters she leans on for support aren’t really there. The mystery man who appears to be stalking her may or may not be malevolent. Her husband may not be as she understands him to be.

A well-structured story, and dealing with a subject that fascinates me, I’m sorry to say: I struggled with this book. Although interspersed with deeply poetic prose, to me, it read like a police report. It felt like a series of facts, rather than a story being told. The dialogue felt rather stilted and I didn’t believe in the friendship between Sarah and her best friend (practically sister), Rachel. They didn’t sound like women to me.

Sarah faces quite a dismal situation all the way through the book, from the domestic disputes of the beginning, to the awkward preoccupation with which characters may or may not be gay (really right the way through), I found this to be a rather uncomfortable read.

However, I persevered, and as the facts of Sarah’s reality, as opposed to her marbled understanding of it, became clear - the story sadly overbalanced, going from sad and cyclical to sickly sweet. There was a suggestion of a lurking darkness in the last few pages but, for me, it was too little too late.

I jumped at the chance to read this book after hearing such good things about it and they sure has hell wasn’t wrong. This story is so beautifully written I just couldn’t peel my eyes away from it and devoured it in a day.

What I didn’t realise was that the story is set close to where I live, so there are plenty of places mentioned that I know which made it even more exciting for me. That I have now found another new local author to read.

The author draws you in from the start and keeps you there until the very last page when we meet Sarah and follow her on a journey that will keep you guessing until the end. I love the fact that this story has that ghostly spiritual element to it. Who is Sarah’s stalker I kept asking myself! the more I got drawn in the more I wanted to know. With an outcome that left me shell shocked! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!

Song of the Robin is a truly spellbinding read which I loved everything about it. Sarah’s character is awesome and I loved her friendship with Rachel.

Not only are there plenty of twists and turns in this story but there was also some OMG moments. Now I am left looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

Captivating and Mysterious!

Song of the Robin is a novel about Sarah who starts having unsettling visions and losing track of time. Her life seems very unhappy and unfulfilling, and she becomes increasingly focused on the person in her visions rather than her real life.

I found I sympathised with Sarah from the start as she’s stuck in an unhappy marriage with a man who doesn’t seem to have much respect for her. She’s increasingly on her own and feeling frustrated with how much she has to do around the house. The visions she has are creepy and unsettling to read about as it’s not clear what’s going on initially – is it a ghost, is Sarah hallucinating, is she ill? As the book progresses I became frightened for her as her life seems to descend out of control. Her friend tries to get her to see a doctor but Sarah is too lost in trying to work out who she is seeing and hearing in her visions to be able to help herself. I suffered with PTSD for many years and one of my symptoms was absences where time would pass and I would literally have no concept of it. This isn’t what is wrong with Sarah but it gave me a real connection to her as I know how frightening it is to one minute be in one place and another to realise you’re somewhere else with no memory of getting there. This aspect of the novel is very well written and I was absorbed in it.

I gradually began to work out what might be happening to Sarah but I didn’t really get it right. It was so unsettling as flashes of her visions began to make some sense to me but I could never fully put my finger on what was going on. I loved that it kept me guessing until all was revealed.

Alongside the storyline with Sarah’s visions we learn more about Sarah’s life. She lost her mum a while ago and she misses her terribly. There is a moment in the book when she goes to visit her mum’s grave and something happens that brings her immense comfort. I admit I cried at this point in the novel. My mum died a decade ago and I still miss her – sometimes I can still smell her perfume and I find it so comforting. I highlighted the section in the book and I will re-read it on the days when I feel in need of some solace. There is a real exploration of the strong bond we have with loved ones, even when they’re no longer with us, throughout this novel. There is a sense that we will always find our way back to the people we love in one way or another and I adored the way these parts of the book were written.

The writing in this novel is beautifully descriptive. Some of it is set in Scotland and I could visualise the landscape as if I was right there with the characters. I do love when setting in a book is done well, and it’s wonderful to feel like I’ve experienced a place that I’ve never been to before.

This book was so different to anything that I’ve read before and I’m so glad I took a chance and read it. This is one of those books that’s hard to define but it has something in it for everyone – it’s a mystery, it’s creepy at times but it’s also really comforting and beautiful. Song of the Robin is a book that I loved and I’ll be recommending it to everyone I can!

Song of the Robin is a captivating, mysterious and brilliant debut novel. I will certainly be looking out for more of R. V. Biggs’ work!
