Product Description

Winner of 46 awards including:
Best Foreign Language Film of the Year – Academy Awards 2016
Best Motion Picture in the Foreign Language – Golden Globes 2016
4 prizes at Cannes including the Special Grand Jury Prize

October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination.

While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the corpse of a boy he takes for his son.

As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child's body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourners Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial.

Critically acclaimed and the winner of countless awards across the world, Son of Saul is a disquieting portrait of the Holocaust through a harrowingly original narrative – one single prisoner’s view; a very personal and human perspective on one of the greatest atrocities in human history.

Directorial debut from László Nemes, with Son of Saul being described as his ‘career-making tour de force’ The Telegraph.

This is not an easy film to watch. Made in the cinema verite style, with hand-held cameras etc this tale of the Holocaust looks at the existence of the prisoners of the Sondercommando, who were forced to operate the gas chambers and crematoria.
There is no redemption, no happy ending. It brings home the squalor and the brutality of the camps.
There is no sound track other than the constant bellowing of the guards and the shouts and screams of the victims. Chaos in hell.

As a testament to the suffering of the victims of the Holocaust , it is powerful, unsentimental and chilling.

A tremendous, powerful film that truly shows what people had to go through at the hands of the Nazis. Not easy to watch because of that but truly rewarding and thought-provoking if you do. Some I see have called it 'dull' and 'truly awful'. Well all I can say is that you obviously are people who have absolutely no feelings or emotions and must be totally soulless and I feel immensely sorry for you. For everyone else, this is a very very moving film and definitely a must for your collection. A superb movie and well worth the awards it has received.

I have watched many, many movies/documentaries on WWII. As far as those which were concerned with life in the concentration/extermination camps this is by far the most affecting and realistic. It is as though you have actually been transported to and are experiencing the horrors of camp life with Saul. I concur with the details in the reviews previously written of this movie; I found it to be harrowing and seriously disturbing but it has contributed greatly to my understanding the degree to which these poor people suffered, more than any other prisoners, in the camps. God forbid that the world should ever end up in a state where this absolute denigration of inhumanity occurs again.

‘Son Of Saul’ is the debut film from Hungarian writer-director Laszlo Nemes, who won the Cannes Grand Prix in 2015 as well as the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Oscars.

Saul (Géza Röhrig) is a Jewish-Hungarian prisoner at Auschwitz-Birkenau near the end of World War II. As a member of the Sonderkommando, Saul has prolonged his own life by helping to herd new prisoners into the gas chambers. Saul has become a soulless cog in a highly efficient machine whose sole purpose is to kill as many people as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Forced to remove all thoughts and emotions in order to survive, Saul is acutely aware of his surroundings, watching and listening to everything, looking over his shoulder, busy working and scurrying around and avoiding any undue attention. An unexpected encounter reveals a sense of purpose in Saul he had worked hard to hide. In an already unfathomable set of situations, and perhaps desperately grasping for meaning, Sauls illogical actions are of a man with nothing left to lose.

Nemes uses a focused, intense and narrow perspective so that Saul is front and centre virtually throughout the film. You feel as though you are standing next to him, the action surrounding him is chaotic, fleeting and usually out of focus. Screams are heard but not seen, blurred bodies being dragged around, your senses are amplified and your imagination is forced to follow suit. You witness a singular vision, not just of a man in crisis but as a reminder that every single life mattered.

Its heartbreaking to see what the Nazi’s have done to Saul, a man whittled down to a state of non-existence where nothing surprises, shocks or moves him.

I cannot 'love' such a creation. This film is so distressing I have yet to view it to the end. Extremely well done, but it takes some watching. My God, this actually happened.

A humbling devastating snapshot into hell on Earth. If you can't imagine what it was like to have lived and died in this horrific time this film will bring you very close. It's heartbreaking. There is no back story and no happy ending. Which makes it all the more real.
