Product Description

Product Description

New Zealand's star of the West End, Meredith Braun, releases her debut solo album. Since 1990 Meredith has been considered one of the West End's brightest stars, originating, playing and recording roles such as Eponine in 'Les Misérables', Betty Schaeffer in 'Sunset Boulevard' (Original cast), Christine in 'The Phantom of the Opera' and Lily in the RSC's 'The Secret Garden'.

After a ten year absence Meredith is now returning to performing with the release of her debut solo album. 'Someone Else's Story' is a hand-picked collection of songs derived from contemporary musical theatre, each one of them a personal favourite of Meredith's, including amongst others Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Michel Legrand, Stiles and Drewe and Stephen Schwartz.

The stunning collection features arrangements and musical direction by Paul Bateman (Sarah Brightman, Lesley Garrett) and was recorded at London's Angel Studios between September - December 2011.

"Her vocal gift was and remains superb" - Trevor Nunn

New Zealander Meredith Braun was all set up to be one of the biggest musical stars we'd seen in years. She burst on to the scene in the late eighties, kicking things off with a showstopping turn in "Bernadette", then originating and recording such roles as Betty Schaeffer in "Sunset Boulevard" and Lily in the Royal Shakespeare Company's 'The Secret Garden' as well as playing career making roles as Eponine in "Les Misérables" and Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera". She also made appearances in West End productions such as "Out Of The Blue" and "Killing Rasputin".

She even managed the ultimate accolade of a film role as Belle in the 1992 film "The Muppet Christmas Carol" opposite Michael Caine, Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppets. There were even a few small screen credits in programmes like "Doctors", "Missing", "New Tricks" and "Spooks". But then, basically, she vanished off the musical scene for ten years, with nary a note to be heard. However, now she's back with her debut solo album.

Recorded over a three month period towards the end of last year, the record sees Ms Braun re-embracing her musical past, with a fine collection of songs, well-known and not so well-known, handpicking them from the songbooks of composers such as Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Michel Legrand, Stiles and Drewe and Stephen Schwartz. You'll find selections from "Chess", "Sweeney Todd" and "Evita", alongside songs from "Yentl", "Love Never Dies" and, yes, the Oscar-nominated 'Rainbow Connection' from "The Muppet Movie"!

And it's utterly superb. Ms Brauns has been a sparse recording career, so I had to go back to my copies of "Sunset Boulevard" and "Les Mis", to remind myself of her voice.

The cover-description "intimate collection" is sort of "Delphic": the arrangements are a "journey over the years ago" by Meredith herself; but "intimate" depicts the arrangements of the album on the whole: arranged by Paul Bateman (Piano) the instrumental accompaniment includes the piano (Paul Bateman) and the cello (Justin Pearson) and the vocalist - that's all. Meredith outlines the album as "discovery of the hidden stories". The collection therefore is an invitation to the audience - to follow neglected artistic pathways. Believe me: it is worth listening!

Meredith Braun's "Someone Else's Story" is in fact a collection of a dozen carefully chosen stories told by a masterful storyteller. Each of them is not simply sang, it is acted brilliantly. Each heroine stands here impersonated - Marguerite, Yentl, Christine Daae - as they tell their tales. But the most touching probably is Meredith's own bedtime story 'Close Your Eyes'.
And yes, Meredith's high notes in the demanding 'Love Never Dies' are flawless.
