Join accident-prone Frank Spencer (Michael Crawford) and long-suffering wife Betty (Michele Dotrice) for the complete first series of the popular 1970s sitcom. In 'The Job Interview' Frank manages to get stuck in a lift en route to his latest job interview. 'George's House' sees Frank unimpressed by Betty's brother's gadget-filled house - especially after he manages to break everything. 'Love Thy Neighbour' has Frank use the new neighbour's phone when Betty's mother has one of her turns. 'Have a Break, Take a Husband' finds Frank and Betty embarking on their second honeymoon. In 'The Hospital Visit' Frank has to fend for himself while Betty is in hospital. 'The Psychiatrist' sees Frank attempt to convince himself - and his therapist - that he is not a total failure. Finally, 'The Employment Exchange' has Frank get into trouble with a tea urn and a computer when he starts his new job.

From Amazon.co.uk

Although Britain has changed almost beyond recognition since Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em was first broadcast in the early 1970s, the show's simple slapstick humour has an ageless quality that makes it enduringly hilarious. Michael Crawford found fame as Frank Spencer, still probably television's most accident-prone man, and still Britain's most mimicked sitcom character, having inspired thousands of wannabe entertainers to don black berets and Humphrey Bogart-style rain coats and feebly exclaim "Mmm, Betty!". Crawford's great insight was to portray Frank as both a figure of fun and an endearingly sympathetic character: we laugh at him but never cease liking him, and we always admire his plucky never-say-die spirit.

Most of the episodes share the common theme of Frank attempting to find a job (ranging from a holiday camp entertainer to an RAF cadet), but because of his clumsy demeanour and lack of common sense, losing the positions within a matter of hours. Pitted against a variety of middle-aged, male professionals (his GP, a psychiatrist and a public relations consultant for example), Spencer's stupidity reduces these "experts" to nervous wrecks. His long-suffering, doting wife Betty (Michelle Dotrice) features throughout, but despite his wild behaviour and idiocy she appears only mildly flustered by her husband's actions.

On the DVD: Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em was one of the first comedy series to be recorded by the BBC in colour, but the sound and vision of the episodes transfer perfectly satisfactorily to DVD format. At times the production values of some of the episodes are decidedly ropey (watch out for stray boom microphones and the skewed opening and closing credit). Apart from the episode and scene selection menus, which incorporate sound extracts from the show, no extras are included. --John Galilee

Who doesn't remember Michael Crawford hanging off a cliff or him skating round the whole town, hanging onto buses and ending up inside a baby's cot? This is a precious collection of probably the best 5 episodes ever!

What can you say? The great adantage of DVD is that, unlike the old VHS days, you get whole series of shows, and you decide which ones are the best! This is just another of those series, and the good, bad and ugly of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em are here. The production of these shows is, by today's standards (and by the standards of the early 70s!) pretty poor, but the performances and scripts are excellent. Can't believe that the Beeb used them as fillers for years. One question remains, though - when will they put out the excellent Christmas specials on DVD?

Very original and funny! Michael Crawford's loppy comedy never fails to make me smile. As someone who was born and raised in the US, I can officially say that before last month, I'd never even heard of this show. But thanks to my recent fanship of Crawford, I discovered this gem of a TV program and bought it without hesitation. Frank Spencer is a loveable, clutsy character that all ages will enjoy watching. And despite the fact that I obviously don't sometimes 'get' British comedy, I truly believe that this is a brand of laughs that anyone could appreciate. Definitely worth the buy!!!

One of the most funniest men on TV. Watch as Frank cause's more catstrophe than any other and comes away without a scratch unfortunatley for all the people around him including his dear wife Betty. This is classic comedy at it's best.

I must be the biggest fan of this sit-com. Although I wasn't alive to see it in the 1970's I studied it briefly for my A'level media exams. Both Crawford and Dotrice make such a fantastic team, it wouldn't be the same if either one of them was not cast. Crawford does such a fantastic job of playing, poor, acident prone Frank Spencer. Although he was only thrid choice to play the character I don't think anyone could do a better job. The innocence of Frank is what makes the character so comical. Betty must have the patience of a saint! I don't know anybody who could put up with such an accident prone husband! Frank lets his inner child control his mind but desperatly tries to behave like an adult which is what makes him so loveable. Classic British comedy!

This DVD contains the Some Mothers do 'Ave 'Em specials from 1974, 1975 and 1978. The 1974 Christmas special (with Frank as the angel) is the most famous and funniest. 1975 is basically a couple of episodes tacked together. The 1978 special is the last ever episode of the show, where Frank takes a flying lesson. It is good, though there is no sort of sign-off or sentimental closing moment to the show: it just ends. The 1974 episode is brilliant, but overall buying the series episodes is probably better value.

First, this series is ridiculously hilarious. The predicaments Frank gets himself and others into are so insane, one cannot help but laugh. However, if you're thinking of buying a copy for someone without a Region 2 player, the "all regions" Region 0 is misleading. Maybe it's the PAL format, which isn't printed on the DVD itself. Whatever it is, I bought this for my nephew, but it won't work on his Region 1 player or on his PS2. Otherwise, this is a fun show that can be enjoyed by all members of the family.

At last this masterpiece of comedy has been brought together all on one DVD. There are no added features and a simple menu, but the classic Frank Spencer slapstick genius is all there, to watch time and time again.
I would urge anyone that is thinking and not sure about buying this or any from the series - do it, i guarantee that you will not be disapointed.
