This Vocalion CD offers "Love is a Now & Then Thing" dating from 1960 with Eric Rogers orchestra and "In My Solitude" from 1964 with Ray Ellis and his orchestra.
The two albums complement each other perfectly and include so many classic songs by the great composers that you are spoilt for choice. The interpretation of a song was always something uniquely Newley and these albums demonstrate just how magically he could deliver a song.
Highlights for me are "This Time the Dreams on Me" and "So Far" and the always poignant "The Party's Over".
The sound quality is first class and the huge running time of approx 72 minutes is a bonus.

In My Solitude is possibly the best album of standards ever recorded including all of Frank's 1950's Capital classics...yes it's that good. Superb arrangements and wonderful phrasing. I've got 3 copies on vinyl and one on CD...whenever I see it I have to buy a copy. I've owned the first copy since 1966 and never tire of listening to it. Treat yourself to this...and by the way "Love Is A Now and Then Thing" is pretty damn good too.

I had a kind of schoolgirl crush on AN and Mum even let me have a day off school to see him at a record signing in Manchester, this was the record and I can still remember the words of my favourite songs on this very under rated album.I left the record at a Boyfriends house in the 60,s and now I have met him again and he still has it and so I have looked it up again and now we are both single again ha ha. Anyway just have to say that this Album and Mr Newleys voice are still in my head and my heart,he sings the songs straight without any quirkiness and his voice is lovely and warm and tender so...this Album rates as special and I think it is the BEST!! of Anthony Newley.

i have long been a fan of mr newley since the early sixties.this double album of familiar and less familiar standards is magnificent.his interpretations are superb and a match for any singer, including mr s!the orchestrations by eric rogers and ray ellis provide excellent support.the reproduction quality is outstanding, given the recordings are over 40 years old.a slight niggle is that there are no personnel listings given for either recording.all in all a wonderful epitaph for a truly original homegrown entertainer!

Back in 1960, Anthony Newley released his first solo album. The result was - as Newley jokingly referred to it - as "a cocktail of lonely songs for suicidal lovers!" The record buying public bought it in their thousands and made it one of the most popular LP's of the early sixties. In 1964 Newley teamed up with Ray Ellis and another fantastic session of lost loves and great standards was born. Mike Duttons digital remastering is faultless and Vocalion deserve praise indeed for bringing these superb LP's to CD for the very first time. This CD should be best listened to at the end of a hard day with three fingers of scotch in one hand and your lover on your arm. Treat yourself and discover why Anthony Newley was one of the most underated artists of our time.

A pleasure to receive and listen to an Anthony Newley recording.

A fantastic entertainer whose talent was never full recognised in the UK, but who was held in great esteem in the US where he performed frequenly.

Differs from many current singers (?) one can clearly hear and appreciate the songwriters skill when Newley sings.
