I came to the latest Black company novel with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation; compared to the earlier books, the Glittering Stone novels have seemed to lack focus and drive. Soldiers Live is a real return to form though. The mythological elements of The GS books are brought to a satisfactory conclusion, without overwhelming the storyline. The later novels in the series have tended to move away from the 'grunts eye view' of warfare, and Soldiers Live follows this line, with a bit too much reliance on sourcery and too little on blood steel and low cunning for my taste. However, all of the Cook trademark features remain firmly in place - the confident characterisation, inventiveness, and willingness to shift the emphasis from one generation to the next to keep the story fresh. Oh, and Croaker's back as annalist - 'nuff said!

This ones gotta be the best in the series. It had a sad type of ending. It really was fun reading, and I was up till 3.00am in the morning finishing the ending because I could not stop reading. There were plenty of action, cunningness, enimies and allies die. I highly recommend that all BC fans read this one, it really gets to the top. Its one those books were you want to know what will happen to your Favourite characters after the ending, that you want to know more.
It is immortality of a sort.
Soldiers live. And wonder why.
Overall: Told from a proper attitude of a soldier. Fast paced action. Excellent storyline. Well drawn of characters. WARNING: once you start reading this, especially the second half, you won't be able to stop.

This is probably one of the best TBC novels that Glen has written. I have been reading the Company for 12 years now, and let me say, this is the perfect ending. I hope that Glen Cook does not write another. This ending was almost poetic and brought tears to my eyes when I read it.
Things are explained and resolved, conflicts are ended, people live and die, old enemies and old friends. Everything that you could want. A very Fitting conclusion. While the door is open for more Black Company novels, I believe and hope that this is the last (I love this series more than any other and it would belittle the ending of this book to continue the series)
Any old friend of the Black Company will not be unhappy with this.

If you are a fan of science fantasy you should definitely read this series of books. IMO they are akin to an unearthed gem - gritty realistic down to earth sad and sometimes funny. A bit like the malazan series of books by steven eriksson without the waffle.
