I’d read all Megan Rix’s War Dogs books set in World War 2, and discussed them with my junior book club. I was looking forward to seeing how a World War One animal story turned out.

In this tale, Sammy, an abandoned dog is befriended by Mouser, a much-loved family cat, and ends up taken to Battersea Dogs Home. He ends up at the Western Front, taken as a mascot for the soldiers. Mouser isn’t far behind – she also ends up there as a ratter cat. And they both meet someone they know from home. And of course find each other. It’s quite nicely done but wholly expected for any adult reading (and in a very familiar format if you’ve read Rix’s previous books).

As with all Megan’s animal books, you do learn a lot. There’s a lot stuffed in there that will tally nicely with the Key Stage 2 curriculum, and with the 2014 WW1 commemorations. There’s some excitement, the trench scenes are quite vivid and well-described. Gas warfare, PTSD, how animals were used in war, all play a role in the story. Even the Christmas Day football match makes a guest appearance.

I’m not a 10-year-old though, so I could also see some points that disappointed. The human characters are fairly two-dimensional, background to the animals though they have speaking roles and take up just as much of the story. We don’t get to learn much about any of the humans. I’d have liked to see more of the Battersea staff, and the soldiers in each of the trenches. The coincidences that bring the characters together is a little hard to swallow, but again, I’m not the average reader.

It’s a fairly thick book but actually is a very quick read, short chapters and easily within reach for 8-12 year olds.

I was in waterstones, when this book caght my eye.It helped that it was in the buy one get one half price as my sister could get one too.

It is the best book I've ever read without a doubt (even better than War Horse). If you love dogs and cats than this is the book for you! It's also good if you like/love Michael Morpurgo books.I would say any age could read this book (A Soldiers' Friend) but not any age below 9/8 if your a good reader.

Sammy is a cute dog who becomes friends with Mouser,a well loved family cat, they both get sent to the front and with a serious problem on the way, Sammy must tell the others at the front. Will he make it?If he doesnt what will happen?'m not going to tell you loads otherwise I'll ruin it
for you!

You must read this book: A Soldiers' Friend.
Sorry for any spelling mistakes.
I hope this helped you.
Thanks for reading!

This book is capable of bringing happy and sad tears to your eyes. I recommend this book to any dog lover of any age. This remarkable story will warm everybody's heart. The heroics of two brave pets saving soldiers!

Having previously read The Great Escape and The Bomber Dog, Megan Rix is a delightful author/dog lover and her stories are a pleasure to read!

A dog the soldiers in Ireland loved. It was kind of similar dog to the one who loved areoplanes. Could not put it down until I had read it.

Reading this to a year 3 class (7 & 8 year olds) they are really enjoying it. Our topic is world war 1 and this book has introduced many topics from that era. A lovely story about a difficult subject written for children to enjoy and understand.
