I have read many Grace Burrowes books, and this is well up with the best of them. I really took to Devlin St Just - having met him when reading 'The Heir' - and Emmaline was the strong kind of heroine that I like. I read this good sized book over two days - to the detriment of most other things! I was totally absorbed by the characters.

As with other books by Ms Burrowes, this is a gently-told, well-written story. It concentrates on the emotional relationships which evolve over a period between two or more people, rather than being an action story. In her hands, I find this very appealing. In some reviews, the odd reader complains that there is a similarity in the format of her books. This may be so - but it is also very much the case with other writers of different genres. If you read a Dick Francis novel, or an Agatha Christie, Ian Rankine, or Ian Fleming to name just a few, you know the format you will get. If you like them, you will eagerly read them all.

I loved this book, and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it to readers of Regency Romances - and also to many who have not ventured into this genre before. To me, she is well at the top of writers of these novels.

i really quite liked this. the period detail is wildly inaccurate but the characters are charming and the emotional stuff is really well written and moving. it is absorbing, hard to put down and you want more when it finishes. i enjoyed heir too and its worth reading that first, altho it's even more inaccurate to period it's still fun. i'll be looking out for more burrowes.

This was a good book and a bit less silly and a bit darker than Heir (which I also enjoyed). Still filled with loads of inaccuracies about the time in which it is set but it's easy to overlook when you are reading as it is a good story.

Up to now I have really enjoyed Grace Burrows books and find the hero/heroine were just right. I always get an instant feeling when reading the first page and to come up against a little girl with who wouldn't be dismissed was great. Lovely read.
