You can also download some new factions others have created if you know where to look, the best ones already come with the game, but there are some pretty decent ones available online as well.
It also doesn't work brilliantly on very new PCs, I bought mine a few months back (mid-high spec) and tried to play Alpha on it. The menus just didn't appear, I was quite disappointed.
Alien Crossfire is the best version of Civ, bar nothing. Alpha Centauri is second best, but better than the rest. Why they don't include the Alien Crossfire expansion in this I can't understand, it has more tech (not by a huge amount, but it seems to me at least 10%), and more interesting (less likely to attack you at random for no real reason) AI, and (as in Alpha Centauri?) automated units are quite capable of fighting without being micro-managed.
