Sojourn With a Stranger - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

"The doll was on my pillow when I returned to my room."
"What madness is this?" Derek paced the hallway. "Someone is up to no good." When he stopped to look at her, she reminded him of a frightened child. Her cheeks were pale, her eyes ringed with dark circles. "I'll get to the bottom of this. The Bible and Baby can not walk from that trunk in the attic," he looked toward the ceiling, "and suddenly materialize in your bedchamber."
"Poor man. The master has finally met a problem he doesn't understand and doesn't possess the ability to control."
"What is that supposed to mean? I tell you, someone in the manor dupes you, Raine."
"No, Derek. A spirit placed the objects in my room, a tormented, recently passed spirit."
"You drag the ghost into the conversation again. Tell me, what are you insinuating? You mean to say Cinda's-?"
"How would I know?" She hissed the words and wrung her hands. "You can't expect me to know what evil machinations occurred before I arrived."
"Evil?" He felt his forehead wrinkle. "Nothing evil transpired. Lucinda lost her mind, took her life." Despite the facts surrounding his wife's death, a niggling fear crept up his spine. "If evil played a part, I swear I wasn't aware of it."

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical romance with a Gothic, spooky flair 2 May 2012
By Debra Dunbar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Raine Brinsley is in a sadly all-too-common situation for young women in the late nineteenth century. Both of her parents have died at sea, her meager family savings gone with them. She hopes to earn enough money working as a servant in a wealthy Norfolk, VA home to pay for the journey back to Maine, and her only surviving relative, an elderly grandfather. At a servants wages, it will take her years to save enough for the voyage, so when the manor's owner, wealthy and attractive Derek Stafford, makes her a very indecent proposal, she accepts it.

Derek Stafford needs an heir. His father has made it very clear that neither he nor his brother will inherit a dime unless they produce a male offspring, and Derek loves Stafford Manor and his lifestyle too much to take the threat of impoverishment lightly. He's determined to never marry again after watching his wife lose her sanity after stillbirth and miscarriage, to the point of her suicide. Raine seems to be the perfect solution.
I know, Derek sounds like a horrible cad. He isn't. There are many scenes with his point of view and the reader can see he is a man who, under the stress of loss, family pressure, and lust, makes a very bad decision. Derek realizes this too, and breaks off the deal with Raine, paying her the full amount and leaving her in peace so he can regain his sense of ethics aboard one of his shipping vessels. The only problem is that he has left Raine pregnant, and there is someone afoot with deadly intentions.

Sojourn With A Stranger has a slightly gothic air with ghosts, and witches of the tea-leaf reading, herbal-potion brewing kind. I loved how the paranormal aspects of the book were in keeping with the historical time period. The presence of bibles and laying-on-of-hands healing, the witchy midwife in the woods, the poltergeists of those wronged give the book that gothic touch I so loved. I really enjoyed the novel and found it difficult to put down.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Change 7 April 2013

I really enjoyed this story. I love historical romances, and I'm always looking for something other than the boring, predictable regency romances. I'm so tired of reading books with one-dimensional characters and headstrong damsels who secretly want to be rescued by a knight in shining armor. Sojourn with a Stranger was refreshing change. The story, a historical romance with some paranormal elements was unique and fresh. The characters, Derek and Raine captured me from the beginning of the book. Derek was a brooding, obstinate man most of the time, but because the author did such a wonderful job of letting the reader inside his head, I totally understood why he did a lot of the things he did. The heroine, Raine was no shrinking violet either. I like that fact that even despite her humble circumstances, she didn't act like a victim. Despite the ghost of Derek's dead wife haunting the house, Derek and Raine were able to find love and passion. The ending had a little twist that I also enjoyed. This is one you won't want to pass up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical romance, with a twist 9 Jan. 2012
By Tonya M. Cannariato - Published on Amazon.com

I ran across this author on Twitter and decided to give her work a try based on the blurb she posted on IAN. The story was an engaging, quick read, for a fun afternoon for me. My one little complaint was the uneven use of dialect in the dialogue; if you can look past that detail, though, the mystery was compelling and the character arcs enjoyable.
