While so much of the political and media discussion on the journey toward more sustainable societies is concerned with technology and policy, there are deeper matters of philosophy and values that we must address. Satish Kumar paints a vivid picture of why we need to seek solutions deep inside human beings. He is a truly holistic thinker and in this profound book he sets out why we need to take a broader view of our route toward a more secure, sustainable and resilient future. --Tony Juniper - Trustee of The Resurgence Trust and former Director of Friends of the Earth
Satish brings us another gem of wisdom in Soil Soul Society. As humanity hangs at a precipice , we need shifts that can be made by each of us, with far reaching implications for the planet and all people. Soil Soul Society provides insights on how we can make these shifts. --Vandana Shiva - environmental activist and anti-globalization author
About the Author
In 1962, Satish Kumar made headlines around the globe when he walked from New Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington, delivering packets of peace tea to the countries leaders with the advice that, before resorting to nuclear warfare as a solution to their problems, they should sit down and have a quiet cup of tea.
Since settling here in 1973 Satish has been the guiding spirit behind a number of ecological, spiritual and educational ventures in the United Kingdom. He has founded the Small School a pioneering secondary school dedicated to bringing ecological and spiritual values
into its curriculum and the Schumacher College, which educates its students in eco-consciousness and the means for effective change.
2013 sees Satish celebrate 40 years as editor of Resurgence (now Resurgence & Ecologist) the magazine which has long been the most articulate champion of ecological awareness and of a reverent way of life characterised by a philosophy of non-violence and humane spiritual values.

Today's leaders and those in power will cold-shoulder the principles advocated in this book. They will mock Satish Kumar as being an idealist, pronouncing him as someone who needs to "get real". Yet, as Satish asks, what have the realists achieved? Millions dead in wars. Millions dying of hunger and starvation, et al. How can we stop the rot? Satish calls for benevolent individuals and organisations such as Friends Of The Earth, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Medecins San Frontieres, etc., to come together and form a strong movement for change and transformation. Let the ayes have it! For the present, get this book and realise there can be a turn-about in policy for this afflicted world.

The ‘trinity’ being: Caring for the natural environment (Soil); Maintaining personal wellbeing (Soul); and upholding human values (Society). Combined they are, rightly, considered ‘the moral imperatives of our time,’ but they are also urgently practical imperatives. Pity a cheap paper version is not available for a wider audience?
