I am a huge fan of Mark Chisnell and have read all his books. Thought that he left Janac behind after he wrote Fulcrum Files and Powder Burn but what a pleasant surprise that he has decided to return to our favourite anti hero in such an ingenious way. Short but gripping, well researched ( as all his books) plus the usual taut writing style makes this a great read. Can't wait for the next episode in Janac's descent to the psychopath he has become when we first meet him in The Defector and The Wrecking Crew

I have read a number of "sniper" books and this short story is probably the bestow them.
It is a tense encounter between two very focused protagonists and they have one aim, to be the survivor.
Set in the Vietnam jungle during the war, the story is atmospheric and brilliant.
Definitely a page turner and for me, just the right length. Well written and researched, I loved it.

Mark Chisnell takes us back to the beginning - where we see the character of Janac created before he became the heartless drug lord of The Defector and The Wrecking Crew. This is not the Janac that I recognised - in fact, this was a Janac that I could almost sympathise with. Almost. Because in his heart he is already a calculating and very accomplished killer. The tension in this story is palpable and the descriptions visceral in their clarity. This works extremely well as a short story - a snippet of one mission in Vietnam. I was hooked from the opening description of the jungle until the last page. Please read - you won't regret it.

I read this short cameo from the Vietnam war whilst travelling in that country. It provides fabulous insight into the sniper's role and once started I didn't put it down until the final scene played out. An excellent read.

Technically pretty good although predictable, author seems a bit too full of himself not only in the notes but also in the story, seems like I have read this somewhere else a long time ago.

Great short novel, thoroughly enjoyable read. Will definitely read more of the writers books. Janac IS certainly a tough character wouldn't want to be caught in his crosshairs
