Product Description

Product Description

A veteran marine sniper (Tom Berenger) and an inexperienced young agent (Billy Zane) are teamed together on a mission to assassinate a Panamanian rebel leader who is heavily protected in a remote area.

From Amazon.co.uk

Tom Berenger and Billy Zane head the cast in this silly action film about a tough Marine and an Olympics marksman who team up in the Panamanian jungle to take out a rebel leader and the drug kingpin financing him. Berenger's done this switched-off soul bit before, but Zane doesn't seem quite ready for his part. In any case, the acting doesn't matter as much to director Luis Llosa as fancy camerawork to give viewers the sense of a bullet hurling along its trajectory. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I HAVE OWNED SNIPER ON VIDEO FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FILMS. I WILL NOT GO INTO THE PLOT, ETC. AS THE OTHER REVIEWS HEREABOUTS WILL TELL YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
I HAVE JUST PURCHASED THE FILM ON DVD AND TO MY HORROR HAVE FOUND MANY CHANGES (FOR THE WORSE) TO THE FILM WHEN COMPARED THE THE VERSION RELEASED ON VIDEO. AS WELL AS THE "KILL" SEQUENCES BEING SPEEDED UP, ie THE SLOW MOTION VIEW OF THE BULLET IN FLIGHT BEING REMOVED, THE MOST GLARING DIFFERENCE IS THE SCENE IN WHICH BECKETT TAKES OUT THE RIVAL SNIPER BY SHOOTING HIM THROUGH HIS TELESCOPIC SIGHT, AFTER SETTING MILLER UP AS BAIT.AS THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCENES IN THE FILM,IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN TOTALLY REMOVED, TO BE REPLACED WITH A POOR EFFORT WHERE BECKETT STRANGLES THE RIVAL SNIPER IN FRONT OF MILLER WHO IS SLEEPING ! VERY STRANGE INDEED. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE DVD VERSION HAS BEEN ALTERED IN THIS WAY, ESPECIALLY AS IT WORSENS THE FILM. MY ADVICE IS : IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN SNIPER, BUY THE VIDEO VERSION - IT IS FAR SUPERIOR.

If you want to own Sniper on DVD, make sure you buy the version sold by Amazon.com, or in other words, the American (Region 1) version. The Region 2 version has poor picture quality, a 4:3 ratio (the American version is 1:85) and is cut to shreds.
Avoid.

This film is ace, a real insite into the life of a USMC sniper. You may think this would be fairly boring as a snipers life is mainly stalking etc. but this is completely different. The two snipers are plagued by south american drug lords and mercenaries, and although the realism is somewhat streched in parts it is a great film. Brilliant!

I saw this film just 3 days ago and I am still in no doubt this is the one of the finest films to ever grace the planet. Billy Zane is a student sharpshooter, Tom Berenger is an experienced sniper, himself and Billy Zane get together after Tom's observer is shot by a rebel sniper, he vows to take revenge, and does so gracefully, all in all this is the finest of the fine, the Manchester United of the film industry, a must watch to say the very least, even when Tom Berenger has all his fingers broken with a piece of string.

Two professional sharp shooters, master Tom Berenger and student Billy Zane, are on search and destroy mission. A journey by walk in the hostile jungles of South America, far away from any map. The movie has a good storyline, although not as epic as Platoon or Apocalypse Now. Sometimes the movie looks like a cheap B-Movie, but the DVD itself is poorest. Only 3:4 Format, poor picture quality, only 2.0 sourround sound. No Options, no Extras. At least the movie itself is uncut on this DVD! The German DVD has been cut by whole 10min due to some blood scenes.

Well what can I say, Hair Wood has summared this film very well........indeed. Even though Billy Zane ends up shooting someone with a pen, I would still highly rate this film, and i'l like to thank director Luis Llosa for such a fine film for young budding snipers out there.

The first time I saw this was the night Bill Clinton lost both houses of congress, after a night of drinking in DC with political junkies like myself. It got me totally out of myself - I was distraught at the election results - and stuck in my mind as a must-have. I did not buy it until now, largely because I thought it was too expensive (I got a region 2 for about $5). At long last, I have watched it again and thoroughly enjoyed it, though did see plenty of weaknesses I didn't notice before.

On the positive side, the characters and acting are truly excellent, both Berenger (the wizened, calloused lifer) and Zane (the brash young man on the move). They head into the jungle of Central America in a state of high tension, with Berenger unsure of the cocky civilian who is not being honest about his inexperience. Right off, Berenger is impressed with Zane's instincts, and in a way takes him under his wing as he undertakes what can only be described as a suicide mission. They meet an array of characters along the way, including a wily local Indian and a wonderfully mysterious stalker whom Berenger once mentored. As the characters pretensions melt away as they approach their kills, the two men begin to strongly bond, though Zane remains murderously angry towards his guide. THe climax, with unexpected dangers and some brutal fights, is very realistic in my view and well worth the price of admission. This is an excellent war film, the first sniper film that I thought was believable, even if a product of hollywood.

On the negative side, it is difficult to understand the terrain and even what exactly it is they want to accomplish.

Sniper isn't exactly top-drawer to start with. Strictly a B-movie by Anaconda director Luis Llosa, it still had a lot of charm, as jaded but experienced sniper 'Beckett' (played by Tom Berenger with moody gravitas), takes on a partner, cocky and untested 'Miller' (played by a charismatic Billy Zane). Miller has no military kills on his record and is an Olympic champion, but the Brass want him on the operation. As they get deeper into the jungle in their mission to hunt down a rebel leader during a meeting with a drug lord, Miller's erratic behaviour and Beckett's refusal to bend begin to cause dangerous friction, and soon it's not just the rebels who are a danger to them.
In the versions I've seen in the past on DVD, Llosa had ladled effects into the film. The bullets had flashy special effects trails and the sniper shots were made to seem far more dramatic, with explosions of gore and a great deal more blood. There was also a dramatic end of movie gun battle. All of the above have been excised from this version, which left me confused about whether I was imagining things until I looked the issue up on the web and found there are 2 versions - the version I've seen before which is the original cut, and this version - the edited UK retail release.
This version is far less dramatic, and the film's ending is so sudden and un-dramatic that it feels like it's come out of nowhere. It has. There's a whole better chunk of movie out there that you've been deprived of. Skip this until they start selling the movie in its un-tampered form.
