Review

Fiona's previous bestsellers, French Relations, Kiss Chase and Well Groomed were well received by the critics:

Walker's style is up-beat and wisecracking, whatever the emotional weather (The Express on Sunday)

'Romps along with plenty of self-deprecating wit' Sunday Times

Hate to love via a one-night stand, misunderstandings and a barrel load of one-liners. You'll love every minute of this book (Company)

Fiona Walker does it again with her latest serving of whimsical banter and feisty characters. ... Fast, furious and fruity (19)

'irresistible ... a pacy tale that keeps you turning the pages in breathless

anticipation' Company

'Simmering sexual tension and steamy escapism. A perfect companion on those sizzling sands.' Daily Mirror

A good choice for a light and frothy summer beach read (Miss London)

Veritable romps through the light hearted side of life. (GQ Magazine)

'Fast, fun and furiously entertaining'

Birmingham Post

Think Jilly Cooper but younger, trendier and much better ... a very funny and entertaining book (Minx)

the funniest, most enjoyable novel I have read all year. Fiona Walker is an unpolished diamond. She is clever, witty, sarcastic and satirical all at once. . . Walker's upbeat style with a barrel-load of one-liners and a cast of feisty characters make for compulsive reading ' (Southern Daily Echo)

Expecting another excellent read after devouring her other three novels, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Snap Happy. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing and unsatisfying. The warmth and hilarity the author managed to deliver seemingly without effort in her other books are completely missing here. The characters are unbelievable and almost unsympathetic - especially Juno, whom I think to be far from funny but downright cruel sometimes. I'm surprised that a lot of readers obviously found her "jokes" witty. Don't get me wrong, the book is still notches above other novels with similar subjects, it just didn't captivate me. "Kiss Chase" will always be my favourite.

Im not usually a fan of this type of fiction, but I thought that Snap Happy was a really funny, touching book. I literally read the whole lot in one night, not finishing til 4am - its been years since I last did that! The thing I liked most was that Juno - the heroine of the story was a size 16-18, and although all her friends were the normal skinny wretches found in this type of novel, she was different. So as well as the usual love story and sex 'n' shopping type stuff, there was also some great writing on how it feels to grow up as a larger than the stereotyped average woman. Something I reckon that many women can relate to. The story line went along at a pretty fast pace, with everything happening in just under two weeks, you get to know the characters pretty well. Try it, I reckon you'll like this book.

This was the very first Fiona Walker book I ever bought. Its a thick old wedge of a book and a cracking read - so it's one I return to time and time again. When uber photographer Jay from NY swaps apartments with Sean from London he also takes on housesitting dutites for Poirot, a dirty talking macaw, and Juno - who happens to be a sexy, funny and terribly untidy stand up comic. With a great supporting cast (including the Bengal cat Bagel and U-boat the turtle) Ms Walker brings us a fantastic story, which is both funny and sad. When Jay says the words "dont try to love me, people dont" after being seduced by Juno, it breaks my heart ... and the love story that develops between the two characters is beautifully written.

Although dubious to read another book like this (I didn't want to spoil the good memories of another similar book), I am so glad I've now discovered Fiona Walker. I had stiffle gigles on the train. Juno is a god-send for all women, regardless of shape and size. She is spunky, go-getting but incredibly insecure. You feel for all her embarrassing situations and all her triumphs - it is one of those books where you are there with her throughout - totally absorbing. Jay, her object of desire, at times, needs a good shake; their situations are, at times, similar to our own trials and tribulations of purusing our own loves, only this you can read and laugh out loud. Her pursuits to make him jealous and her insecurities put our own into perspective with hilarious consequences. I would highly recommend it, not just for the beach, but the train as well. It will brighten up anybody's day as you laugh and cry with Juno.

I am a huge Fiona Walker fan, and have read all her books, especially loving her first three (French Relations, Kiss Chase and Well Groomed,) with their great characters and action packed, what's-going-to-happen-next plots. However, I had never read Snap Happy until now because school friends at the time it was written warned me that it wasn't very good. Ten years later, I decided it was time I made up my own mind about it, and was horribly disappointed to discover that they were right. As much as I liked the character of Juno, and a tiny bit of suspense is presented in the form of Jay's mysterious character and background, there is no plot at all- just 566 pages leading to what was obviously going to happen all along. I don't think it is spoiling it because this is mentioned on the blurb, but Juno and Jay's three-night stand and the after math just didn't really ring true for me.

It was well written enough to make me smile on several occasions and keep me going to the end, and filled in the gaps of the same characters that appear in Between Males, but overall I felt like Fiona was being pressured by her publishers to come up with another book and hurridly spat out this. Anyone else would have got two stars- only because it is her does she get three.
