Product Description

It was 1988 when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake had shaken north-western Armenia. Four minutes later it was followed by a 5.8 aftershock. Whole communities and the infrastructure had been destroyed. The authorities in the Soviet Union had to ask for outside help and the iron curtain that had divided east and west was opened up to let assistance through.
Jon Dee who was asked to get footage for TV and radio out of the disaster zone felt he had to Do Something. After helping with the immediate fundraising that was taking place in London, he decided to launch a fundraising push with people from the Rock business. Having worked with the band Yes in early years, Dee got in contact with many prestigious people he now wanted to convince to be part of his project. The result was Rock Aid Armenia which was initiated in 1989 to raise
money to help those affected by the Leninakan earthquake that struck Armenia.

This is something of a forgotten gem from 1989, originally recorded to raise funds to aid the victims of the Armenian earthquake of December 1988 that killed tens of thousands & made hundreds of thousands homeless. While re-interpreting a classic track is a tricky proposition, the calibre of the musicians involved ensures an end result which, while of course not able to replace the Deep Purple original, stands up in its own right. While it stays true to the original arrangement, the many artists involved ad their own embellishments which are interesting, yet do not overwhelm the song.

The lead vocals on the three verses are split between original vocalist & lyric writer Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson & Paul Rodgers, with Bryan Adams assisting on backing vocals. The man behind the riff, Ritchie Blackmore, is one of the featured guitarists, along with Tony Iommi, Brain May, David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson of Rush & session ace Geoff Beauchamp. The rhythm section features Yes man Chris Squire on bass & Queen's Roger Taylor on drums, and Keith Emerson & Geoff Downes contribute keyboards.

What you get on the CD are 4 mixes of the track: the 1989 original, the radio mix (an interesting alternative version, but edits out the Paul Rodgers verse), an early version which features a complete vocal from Ian Gillan, plus a new mix which helps to highlight some of the performances that were somewhat lost in the original mix.

Perhaps the real gem of this package is the DVD element, which features the 40-minute `making of' documentary (previously issued on VHS), which tells the story of the 5 sessions over which the song was cut. It features interviews with many of the featured artists, plus great footage of each of them recording their contributions & some fun jamming between takes.

It's great to see these rock ledgens comming together and really having fun, puting it all together in a good down to earth atmosphere and like there all in same band. All working proffetionally together and not receiving a penny as the proceeds mainly going to the after effect situation of the Armenian Earthquake.
It comes with 2 disks -one with the music soundtrack[cd] and the second a documentary [dvd]with the music making +some earthquake footage.I also looked on the rockaid armenia site which has some great original photos of my rock heros.

For anyone who grew up on classic 70s rock this CD/DVD is a must-have. Even if you were never that keen on Smoke on the Water as a song you'd have to acknowledge the iconic status of its riff, the first that thousands of aspiring guitarists learned to play. The real joy here is seeing so many famous musicians getting together in the 'making of' DVD and the cameraderie between them as they trade licks. Oh, and comparing and contrasting the vocals of Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson and Paul Rodgers isn't exactly a chore either (with a bonus bit of Bryan Adams, who just happened to be checking out the studio that day, for good measure). And it's for charity, so you can feel completely good about it whilst indulging yourself with a fabulous collaboration.

This is a very poignant cause, and I am glad it has been re-released. It was good to hear interviews from the artists, some of which don't usually give interviews (RICHIE!!) Well recommended

A worthy momento of a time when the legends of rock (well, quite a few of them) came together with the aim of raising badly needed cash for the Armenian Earthquake appeal
