Eighteen-year-old Sandis rarely sees the sun. In a filthy, hyperindustrialized city, she’s on the run from her longtime captor, whose diabolical designs include transforming her into a fearsome magical spirit that he alone can control. When she meets Rone—a skilled thief who prowls the city’s rooftops protected by an ancient artifact that allows him one minute of invincibility each day—she sees him as the possible key to rescuing the fellow captives she left behind.
But after they strike a tenuous agreement and attempt to evade her former captor’s minions (human and otherwise), they are challenged first and foremost to trust each other, and from this initial premise, the book raises the stakes, again and again, culminating in a larger and more complex fantasy tale than I’d ever bargained for when I first began reading it.
I couldn’t be more excited to introduce Charlie’s new series, both to readers who already love her work and to those who have yet to discover this rare storytelling talent.
