From the Back Cover

In a searing novel of love and loyalty, guilt and honour, the acclaimed author of the international bestseller The Horse Whisperer creates another magnificent epic...

THE SMOKE JUMPER

His name is Connor Ford and he falls like an angel of mercy from the sky, braving the flames to save the woman he loves but knows he cannot have. For Julia Bishop is the partner of his best friend and fellow 'smoke jumper', Ed Tully. Julia loves them both - until a terrible fire on a Montana mountain forces her to chose between them and burns a brand on all their hearts...

In the wake of the fire, Connor embarks on a harrowing journey to the world's worst wars and disasters to take photographs that find him fame but never happiness. Reckless of a life he no longer wants, again and again he dares death to take him, until another fateful day on another continent, when he must walk through fire once more...

As a client, Nicholas' s book was not a surprise - what is a continued surprise is his amazing ability to weave a story that is so American, when he is very firmly British. Another excellent book, by a wonderful author and a thoroughly likeable chap.

Having read the horse whisperer and prefering it to the film - I read The Loop. I actually thought that the second was better than the first. I looked forward to reading the third and Oh boy - was not dissapointed. I literally had trouble putting the book down. I got so wrapped up in the characters, I felt I was sharing all the emotions I was reading about. It made me cry in places.
I recommend this book to anyone - and thank you Mr Evans for a great read - we look forward to your next one!!

Waw, where do I start. Yet again Nicholas Evans never fails to deliver another remarkable novel, one that will always stay with you. The emotional depth and vivid descriptions are phenomenal and make you feel as if you are living through or are involved in the characters lives in some way. As the story progresses so does the drama and suspense, and there's a poem at one point that sent me in a fit of tears, it was physically impossible to go on reading at this point as the sadness it conjured was so gripping and overwhelming.
Either I have a vivid imagination or the author himself is so convincing and genius.
Nicholas Evans has a way of weaving words into reality, tragic, obsessive, energetic, is his style, compelling the reader to dive into a world or intense feeling.
The story centres around three characters in their late twenties that span over several years present day. Two best buddies Connor and Ed who live in Montana, and Julia, Eds girlfriend, the tragedy is displayed not only in the love triangle between them but takes you on the unconscious journeys of each character in depth, plus Connors professional journey to Africa and Bosnia as a Photographer, where the reader will certainly get an education if not a reality check which certainly is no fiction.
This magnificent epic will surely one day be a film, as should also be The brave and The Loop.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough - a wonderful blend of love and tragedy. The descriptions of war-torn Bosnia and Rwanda are truly horrifying and clutch at your heart just as much as the love story. I really could not put this down - given the time, I would have read it from cover to cover in one sitting.

This is a truly fantastic book! A heart wrenching but warming story, which grabs at your emotions and doesn't let go. One of the best books I've read in a long time - and I read a fair few! It keeps you yearning for more, but never wanting to reach the end!

I am a big fan of Nicholas Evans. I have read The Loop and The Horse Whisperer and I loved them, I thought they were fantastic. As soon as I heard he had a new book I raced out and bought it. But I have never been so disappointed with a book before.
I will admit I learned some new things about smoke jumpers. In the same way as I learned about horses in The Horse Whisperer and wolves in The Loop. But the whole storyline did not appeal to me and I was bored by a quarter of the way through. Normally he protrays very strong characters for me, they were weak. It was also a very predictable story and I was forcing myself to continue.
I do hope his next book will be a lot better.

Admittedly, this follows the same format as its prequels but hey - if it ain't broke don't fix it!

This book is also full of intensity and beautiful descriptions of everything from setting to emotions and very romantic. Nicholas Evans has this way with language of just making everything beatutiful and romantic even with cliches :D

Loved it. I say, if you liked his others, if you like romance books then read this.
