Product description

Product Description

"For my money Megson are amongst the most exciting trailblazers of British Contemporary Folk." Seth Lakeman Originally from the North of England, Stu Hanna and Debbie Palmer moved to London the year before releasing their début album On the Side in 2005. In the subsequent two years, they have steadily won a growing legion of fans on the London acoustic scene (and across the British folk/roots movement) with their captivating songs, poignant lyrics, beautiful harmonies and impeccable musicianship. They have a relaxed, easy stage manner that belies the vibrancy of the song performances. Plaudits have come thick and fast, not only from the fans but also musicians like Mercury Music Prize nominee Seth Lakeman, BBC Radio 2 DJ Bob Harris (who has an upcoming BBC session in June with the duo) and such key music publications as fRoots. Tracks: Smoke Of Home / Lambkin / Follow It On / Fell To The Breeze / Sammy's Ghost / Just As The Tide / I Lied / Humanlands / Durham Gaol / Flood Water / Name Of The Rose / Everynight When The Sun Goes In.

'Smoke Of Home' is a beautiful and hugely rewarding album. Melodic, well produced and with lyrics worth listening to as well as great vocals you simply cannot go wrong.

I have only recently discovered a love of more traditional music and so this album was initially a bit of a departure for me. Gentle acoustic guitars and harmonies the Corrs would kill for are a far cry from my last purchase ('The Gap Band VI') but that 's the wonderful thing about music it can provide something different to suit every mood. 'Smoke of Home' is not all wistful, meandering acoustic, flute and loveliness though. Take the uptempo and light- hearted 'I Lied' for example. Its a really unusual take on a love song and will make you smile as often as it warms your heart. In contrast, the opener and title track is a song with a message and tells of a girl who leaves home to go off in search of better things elsewhere. Things do not work out for her, however, and the message therefore is that often you are better off getting used to the smoke of (tall chimneys) at home than running away to search for pavements lined with gold...

'Lambkin' is I would suggest more like the traditional folk fodder you might expect from such an album. This said, it is still hugely entertaining and along with the romantic, dreamy 'Just As The Tide' adds even more light and shade to proceedings. With plenty of Irish musical influences seeping through and smidgens of blues (and even Asian music on 'Name of The Rose') coming through 'Smoke of Home' is a coherent but ever changing record and sounds all the better for it.

Look, enough reviewing, just buy this - you won't regret it, I promise.

I only bought this due to a good review in fRoots magazine, and it's rapidly become one of my favourite albums. Unlike a lot of the recent folk artists, this doesn't suffer from being too same-y. Each song tells a unique story to the accompaniment of varied arrangements and crystal clear singing with a faint hint of a lovely accent. Memorable, emotional and exciting, sometimes all within the same song. It doesn't get better than this.

Truly excellent album, catchy rhythmic hooks in "smoke of home" and "fell to the breeze" balanced by the mellow "follow it on". The Nu-folk style is reminiscent of the now-split-up US band Nickel Creek, but the accents are much better in Megson ;). Saw these guys and Cheltenham and was very impressed, and the album was certainly no disappointment, very very good, and pleasing to a pop pallete as well, not just for folk-heads.

Megson seem to be going from strength to strength! Although seeing them live is probably the best way to appreciate them fully, the mixture of songs on here is really fantastic. From some brilliantly atmospheric slow and sultry numbers like "Lambkin" and "Flood Water", through to the catchy "Fell To The Breeze" and title track "Smoke of Home", the quality in the playing, singing and writing is obvious. Personal favourite is the very funny and perfectly put together "I Lied" - guaranteed to get your foot tapping. Go buy!
